Men’s socks ‘were lucky charms’ for US serviceman

We’ve already revealed how pink socks saved a girl’s life this week, but it has emerged that one family in America has kept a pair of men’s socks in the family for over 60 years because they are believed to be lucky.

At a ceremony to commemorate servicemen in the Merchant Marines during World War II, Paul Doell revealed how his father Raymond came to believe his socks were charms – because he was wearing them when he survived three ships sinking due to German attacks.

"The second time he was running down the burning deck with his socks on fire before he was able to jump into the water," the brave man’s son told the Lehigh Valley News.

The charred black socks were kept as a memento. And we know you’re now dying to make like the Kings of Leon (sort of) and sing: "oooh, your socks are on fire…"

Mercifully, there’s not much chance of being torpedoed by German U-boats these days, but if your man is going to be doing a lot or running about, why not buy him Calvin Klein’s Men’s Coolmax Socks from

They will wick away moisture and have a cushioned sole – just don’t let him set them ablaze…

Liquid leggings ‘will stand out for A/W 09

When all the big name US stores start getting their key trends out, you know it’s only a matter of time before they make their way across the pond.

And, according to the fashion buyers at Bloomingdale’s New York, this autumn and winter will be all about accessorising with hosiery.

"Liquid leggings and shiny tights will be the standout choices for this season, but fishnets, ribbed knit tights, and animal prints are all important layering pieces," the store said at its fashion unveiling this week.

It also tipped novelty prints like houndstooth and plaid as being hot for pairing with your warmer weather clothes for a great movie star look.

The store suggested sporting leggings with a strong-shouldered jacket in order to create the "inverted triangle" shape that’s going to take us back to the ’80s as the leaves start to fall.

If you want to start shopping ahead, check out our patterns and prints section at, as well as our leggings page for Religion’s Gun Metal Wet Look Leggings.

These are so super shiny that it’s like having liquid pewter on your pins, so they should fit in with Bloomingdale’s tips perfectly!

2009′s winter tights ‘will have a flashy upgrade’

While we may have been happy with ordinary opaque tights last year, this is 2009 – we’ve been stuck in a recession for what feels like ages and we want some excitement in our lives, even if it is simply via our tights!

Looking ahead, the Washington Post reckons that’s exactly what the fashion houses are going to come up with for us as autumn approaches, since the catwalks have been positively glimmering.

"Designers at Miu Miu, Cynthia Rowley and Emanuel Ungaro embellished, encrusted and enhanced neutral-hued legwear by piling on glimmering, shimmering stones and gems," the publication points out.

It suggests trying out hosiery stitched with a few tasteful crystals in order to make the trend wearable for a night out.

As usual, your wish is our command – we have the very thing in Bebaroque’s Viper Luxx Tights, which have a floral pattern and scattered crystals in gold and pink.

Shocker – Paris Hilton dresses sensibly in flat shoes and leggings

Think Paris Hilton and you probably conjure up images of the heiress looking overdressed and orange at various glamorous events.

So we were as shocked as the next person to see pictures of her arriving at LAX airport this week looking as though she had actually dressed to travel and not to party!

The 28-year-old wore a black, floaty embellished top and cardie together with black leggings and super-cute silver flatties with a flower motif.

In fact, if you ignored the obligatory sunglasses, you could be mistaken for overlooking her – she even put a baseball cap over her blonde tresses!

However, we were interested to see that she seemed to have customised her leggings, since they had a silver patch on each knee.

Hopefully it was a fashion statement and not a sign that the credit crunch affects celebutantes too!

If you need some leggings to wear on a flight, why not opt for Aristoc’s Slouchy Rib Footless Tights with Wool from, which will keep you super comfy whether you customise them or not.

Essential accessories like sheer tights will make your wardrobe work

Investing in some key accessories will allow you to make your wardrobe work harder by rendering outfits suitable for both work and play.

This is the advice of Camilla Ridley-Day of the Daily Mail, who insisted: "Invest in the essentials and the rest is simple."

For example, the fashionista recommended popping sheer black tights on under city shorts for work, or wearing them with nude tights for the weekend.

Another suggestion was pairing a smart dress with black tights for the office, but toning it down with a snug cardie and grey leggings for a Saturday shopping trip.

And where did Camilla suggest you go for this transformational hosiery?, of course!

We have got a great range of practical yet stylish tights, even if we do say so ourselves! Why not try Charnos Run Resist Sheer Tights, which are available in black, barely black, nude and natural and will even prevent ladders. Now, if only we could teach them to make the tea…

Claire Danes dominates New York in black fishnets

As teenagers growing up in the ’90s, for us the name Claire Danes conjured up the pretty, slightly gawky girl who starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet.

So it came as something of a shock to see her posing in America’s Black Book mag high above the streets of New York dressed in a barely-there leotard, fetish-style heels and black fishnet tights.

The shoot is her most revealing yet, but she said she was pleased to do it because it made her feel bold and powerful.

Commenting on the amount of derriere on show, she laughed: "Wow, I’ve never flashed an entire city before. It’s great, as a woman, to feel entitled to express strength and power."

Claire will next be on our cinema screens in the film Me and Orson Welles, in which she stars opposite Zac Effron.

If you want to feel like a superhero a la Ms Danes, try Jonathan Aston’s Fishnet Back Seam Tights from, which are sure to add sex appeal and shine to any outfit!

Prepare to pull your socks up next season

Fashionistas who like to be in the know when it comes to the latest fashion trends may be interested to hear that autumn/winter 09 is less about the outfit and more about how you accessorise it.

This is the advice of the Independent’s Gemma Hayward, who explained that the devil will be in the detail next season – and that a key accessory will be women’s socks.

"Pull your socks up. Literally. Wear them just below the knee or up high on the thigh," she encouraged.

The style expert took examples from the catwalks, pointing out that Mui Mui and Vivenne Westwood were all about embellished knee high socks, while Marni went for texture and ribbing.

As usual, we’ve got the very thing to emulate your fashion house idols without having to shell out big time.

For embellished socks, try’s Bebaroque Dorothy Socks with their beautiful bow print.

However, if it’s texture you’re after, try our Trasparenze Dora Wool Rib over the knee socks, which are available in an array of scrumptious colours (pictured).

Pink socks save Kent girl’s life

While socks can often save an outfit from looking drab or your feet from getting blistered, it’s not often that you can say they saved your life.

But that’s exactly what happened to an unnamed 16-year-old girl in Kent this week. The teenager had chosen a bright pair of pink socks to wear with her sandals for a walk on Herne Bay – and we bet she’s now eternally grateful!

She slipped while trying to retrieve something she had dropped between the rocks and got her head stuck under two large boulders. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the tide began to come in and – like something out of Final Destination – put her in very real danger of drowning.

However, after many agonising minutes of struggling, a passer-by named Derek Champ spotted her pink socks flailing in the air and alerted the emergency services.

As the water began to lap around her hair and mouth, she was pulled free by fireman using the Jaws of Life. Phew!

"We were strolling along the promenade when we saw a pair of pink socks sticking out from the rocks. That girl was very lucky indeed not to drown," Mr Champ commented.

She certainly was! And if you want to add some pink socks to your wardrobe in case of potential disasters, check out for Jonathan Aston’s Ankle Socks, which are available in orange, white, yellow and the all-important pink!

Anna Wintour lays into Letterman’s socks!

She is known as Nuclear Wintour thanks to her fearsome reputation in the fashion industry and Vogue editor Anna Wintour kind of lived up to it on Letterman’s Late Show yesterday.

While she did come across as less cold as she has been portrayed in the past – she even got a few laughs – David Letterman’s choice of men’s socks did come in for something of a critique.

After the host put his feet on the table to ask her opinion of his choice of hosiery, Anna pursed her lips and called them "interesting" – which clearly meant "they’re completely wrong"! She also suggested that he opt for a different suit than the one he was wearing since it didn’t suit him – ouch!

However, she did have a point with the socks – Letterman was wearing grey socks with a black suit, which certainly didn’t look as good as black socks would have done.

If you want to make sure that your man doesn’t make the same mistake, hop over to the men’s socks section at – Falke’s Airport variety are a classic style that will keep his feet cool while looking great at the same time. They are also available in black!

Katy looks Perry nice in nude fishnets

It seems like only yesterday that the festival season began, but we now have to make the most of the last few as summer draws to a close.

And by make the most of, we mean pore over all the outfits that the pop and rock girls wear so that we can copy!

This weekend, it was V Festival time and while the rest of the UK was bemoaning the no-show of Oasis, we were busy being distinctly impressed by Katy Perry’s ’80s retro rigout.

The I Kissed a Girl popette sported a jewel-encrusted black bra top with sparkling PVC high-waisted hotpants and nude fishnet tights, which perfectly offset the whole ensemble.

Nude fishnets are great when you want a little extra coverage but not the full-on effect of black ones – Jonathan Aston’s Micronet variety from are available in natural, black (pictured) or chocolate.

Meanwhile, we couldn’t help but notice Holly Willoughby’s laid-back style as she watched the V performers from the crowds in a pretty floral dress and navy footless tights – that’s what we call a yummy mummy!

See Katy’s cool ensemble here.
