Seam Style

Some things never go out of style: the little black dress; the classic trench coat; the lace-up brogue. For us hosiery lovers, it’s the classic back seam on a stocking or tights leg that will always have a place in our wardrobes. Once upon a time, seams on stockings were something women took for granted as all hosiery was cut from a flat piece of fabric and stitched together at the back to create shaped stocking legs known as fully-fashioned stockings.

Nowadays, with the advent of tubular knitting machines, most manufacturers embroider or print seams onto hosiery as it’s no longer necessary to cut and sew them together. This has allowed hosiery designers a lot of scope to experiment with many colours, patterns and much more, and so back seams have enjoyed constant popularity over the decades as they are reinvented every season.

Winter or summer, day or night, seamed tights and stockings are an outfit addition that will never fail to make us feel a little more dressed up and glamorous, so here for you are MyTights best back seams.

jive-tights-naturalnaturalBest for Everyday

Seamed hosiery doesn’t always have to be confined to special occasions. A subtle seam can add a hint of allure to your office ensemble too. If you choose nude on nude, these back seamed beauties will have just the very faintest line running the length of the legs, so they’re ideal for pairing with workwear. Nude on nude seams are available from brands including Jonathan Aston and Pamela Mann.

Best for Luxury

There are few things more chic than back seam tights, and there are few people more chic than the French, so it’s not surprising that our favourite luxury seams come from French house Gerbe. Gerbe have been producing fine hosiery since 1895 and still use the same traditional haute couture techniques to produce their Carnation fully-fashioned stockings. We also love their Fatal back seam tights and hold ups ? not fully-fashioned, but still elegant, beautifully made and heaven to wear.

Best for Colour

When we want colourful legs, it’s?Jonathan Aston we turn to first. Not only does the fashion-forward British brand produce a range of seamed tights, hold ups and stockings with bold, brightly coloured seams in a variety of shades, they’ve also come up with some seriously statement-making styles like the Animal back seam tights (try the violet with leopard print seam) or the Carnival back seam tights with a wide Aztec-style print in a contrasting colour.

Best for Budgets

Style on a shoestring? Pamela Mann always delivers. The Jive range of seamed stockings, tights and hold ups from another fashion-conscious British manufacturer is an all-time favourite and with all the items in the range priced at less than ?7, it’s not hard to see why. The best thing about Pamela Mann’s seams is that they look fantastic too, with a highly visible, bold back seam and uniquely shaped reinforced heel ? just ask the fashion editors at Vogue who snapped Kate Moss in them for their April issue (see Kate Moss in Vogue here). Pamela Mann also do a perfectly-priced range of seamed fishnets too!

MyTights stocks many more styles of seamed hosiery so if you’re inspired to give back seams a try have a look at our full range of seams and try adding a little vintage-style glamour to your look.

Grazia: Better Than Bare Leg Look Tights

Grazia 20/07/10

After spotting that Carla Bruni-Sarkozy’s utterly flawless legs were down to the secret of “cosmetic tights”, Grazia decided to investigate the makeover of tan tights – stating that they are “in the midst of a massive, if secret, fashion revival”. This summers trend for bare legs can be traumatic for those without perfect pins – so “the logical thing to do is cheat”. Wolford’s Luxe 9 Tights are a celebrity favourite – as seen on the legs of Beyonce, Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer and SJP. Pretty Polly’s Naturals range is another favourite for looking “as if you are not wearing tights”, but the winner is Falke’s Shelina range! Our very own founder and hosiery expert, Laura Godsal, was even quoted in the article saying “When I am wearing my Shelinas, people always say to me ‘I cannot believe you are wearing tights’. We have noticed a massive surge in sales of all natural tights, which is usual in the summer, but this year we are already 15 percent up. The toeless Shelina has taken the biggest leap in sales because you can wear them with sandals an no one knows”. So as Grazia put it – “you will never have a bad leg day again!”

Grazia Vote Falke’s Shelina Number 1 for Bare Leg Look

The sun is shining down on MyTights HQ and we?re all pulling out our summer clothes. But wait, what?s this? Pasty sun-starved legs? Certainly not the chicest way to accessorise for the new season! Luckily for us this week Grazia have unleashed the “secret fashion revival” of tan tights and they called upon my expertise, quoting me on my favourite bare leg look tights - Falke?s Shelina range. This definitive collection of tights, hold ups and socks to give you ?better than bare? legs – was also voted number 1 by Grazia! Wolford’s Luxe 9 Tights came in a close second, and are a favourite of celebrities including Beyonce, Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni and Sarah Jessica Parker! Pretty Polly’s Naturals range were another of Grazia’s favourites for evenly coloured and slightly dewy legs.

See the MyTights in Grazia here.

The name Falke is associated with quality, luxury and innovation, so it?s really no surprise that the Shelina styles are such a favourite. ?People actually think that you have bare legs? one of our customers says, and it?s true ? the super-sheer legs might be 12 denier, but until someone can?t resist stroking your flawless-looking pins, they won?t know you?re wearing anything at all, and the amazing second-skin Lycra-free yarn is so light and cool that you just might forget too.

Falke Shelina Tights

The basic Falke Shelina Tights are an ideal starter for those of you who?ve not previously indulged in Falke hosiery, although at just ?7.50 per pair this is one luxury you can definitely afford to treat yourself to. These are the sheer tights that you?ll want to wear every day, and not just because they make your legs look so fabulous. You?ll also find them supremely comfortable to wear, with ultra-flat seams that will be invisible under the tightest of outfits, and if that wasn?t enough to convince you the sheer toe and sheer-to-waist brief mean that even peep-toe shoes and mini skirts won?t give the game away!

We know, though, that there are few things more frustrating than having to restrict your shoe choices because you?re wearing tights, but the genius designers at Falke have solved that one too. With the Shelina Toeless Tights a narrow reinforced band around the open toes of these tights sits invisibly under sandal straps, so that you can show off both the new pedicure and the impeccable legs that will make all your friends green with envy.

The other problem often faced by habitual hosiery wearers is that presented by low-waisted skirts and shorts. It?s no good having the best bare-leg-look tights in the world if the waistband is showing above your hipster skirt! That?s why Falke developed their Shelina Hipster Tights, with a truly ingenious three-tier waistband designed to stay put no matter how low you go.

Falke Shelina Hold Ups

Fans of hold ups are catered for too ? Falke Shelina Hold Ups offer the same perfect nude finish legs topped off with a beautiful silicone-backed luxury lace band that you definitely won?t mind someone seeing, even if it does mean they discover the secret to your enviable pins! But if even the long-awaited start of summer can?t tempt you to give up your trousers in favour of skirts and shorts, Shelina Anklets and Shelina Knee Highs are also available at a tiny ?3.00 and ?4.50 each respectively ? not a lot to pay for perfection!

The range of colours available is without equal, and there really is one for absolutely everybody. Here?s our guide to the shades…

Black: A true black in a super-sheer finish.

Ebony: Deepest brown, ideal for very dark African skins.

Coffee: Warm coffee/chocolate, slightly lighter than Ebony. Good for African and dark Asian skintones.

Noisette: Dark olive tan, perfect for Asian and darker Mediterranean skins.

Sun: Warm tan with red undertones, great for tanned Olive English skin.

Brasil: Olive-toned tan, great for Mediterranean skins or for adding natural-looking colour to paler legs.

Powder: Light warm tan, ideal for sunkissed Olive English skin.

Golden: Gentle gold tone, will give a healthy glow to English Roses.

Crystal: Palest peach, the perfect shade for perfecting English Rose skin.

So Falke?s Shelina range has the best nude-effect, styles to suit every occasion and colours for every skintone, but did we mention that even tall and fuller-figured women can benefit from Shelina?s miracle formula? Falke literally have perfect summer legs covered ? just don?t tell anyone!

Brand Focus: Pamela Mann

It’s hard to believe that Pamela Mann has been producing the affordable fashion legwear we love for nearly 55 years! The company was founded in 1956 and has been known ever?since as the go-to label for the very latest in hosiery?style. Here at MyTights we know that wherever there’s a hint of a tights trend Pamela Mann are sure to have produced a fabulous design that’s easy on the purse too. These are some of our favourites.

Waterlilly Lace Tights

Lace tights have been a huge hit for the summer, and the Waterlilly Lace tights by Pamela Mann are our top pick. The beautiful large floral pattern is a serious eye-catcher, but they’re also available in a range of bright colours that will ensure you definitely have the most attention-grabbing legs in town. Whether as a super-feminine addition to a simple little black dress or to glam up your denim cut-off shorts, at just ?7.05 Pamela Mann’s Waterlilly Lace tights are an easy and inexpensive way to tap into this season’s lingerie trend too.

3D 50 Denier Tights

Given that Pamela Mann manufactured Mary Quant’s iconic legwear for 25 years, it’s no surprise that the brand is so brilliant at rainbow-hued hosiery. There’s a huge range of styles and deniers, from knee socks to footless tights and everything in between, but for wearable everyday colour the 3D 50 denier tights are hard to beat. In a fantastic range of colours, these opaque coloured tights are especially durable as well thanks to the 3D yarn technology which means elastane is knitted in with every thread to ensure a second skin fit, an extra-strong knit and super-soft finish. Coloured opaques are just the thing to lift your spirits on those colder, rainy days of summer we’ve been having, and they’ll continue to be a big trend for winter ? it’s all about tonal colour-blocking for next season! With a tiny price tag of ?4.95, you can experiment to your heart’s content.

katemoss_vogueJive Seamed Stockings

Back-seam hosiery will never go out of style, but when you see Kate Moss sporting a pair of Pamela Mann’s Jive seamed stockings in the pages of Vogue (this year’s April issue), you know they’re back in a big way. While we can’t guarantee that slipping into a pair will make your pins resemble the gazelle-like limbs of Ms Moss, we can definitely recommend them as a seductive style classic. The Jive stockings are available in several colourways, each with a striking back seam and reinforced heel, sole and toe, and if you’ve never tried wearing seams before these are a perfect pair to try, especially when they’re only ?5.10!

Whether you’re a girly girl, a rock chick or a sophisticated stylista, Pamela Mann has something for everyone, and whilst we have our favourites we’re sure that amongst our huge range of Pamela Mann tights and socks you’ll find your own!
