Baby, it’s cold outside…

As autumn slides seamlessly into winter it’s time to come out of denial, delve into the back of the wardrobe and dig out those winter knits. When commuting on bitter winter mornings, we at are especially thankful for woolly tights – the first line of defence against chilly knees!

Now I know what you are thinking but wool tights have come a long way since our school days.  To prove it, we have a selection of the most luxurious, sophisticated and funky wool tights on the market.

If you’re nervous about trying wool tights or you just want a classic look then you might want to try these Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights.  They might be as warm as toast but you can still see a hint of leg underneath meaning that they are as flattering as your trusty opaques.

Cashmere has to be the ultimate in luxury winter fabrics so the Elegance Cashmere Blend Tights, also from Falke, have to be the choice in indulgence for your legs.   The great thing about the subtle but wide ribbing on these tights is that they make your legs look longer and thinner.  These are a definite winner if you want to keep wearing your shorter skirts well into winter. The cream woolen feel tights are seen here> are a great choice for winter weather.

For those that favour hold ups, Trasparenze has come up with the goods with its Jennifer Wool hold–ups, which are as soft as kittens and look wonderfully sophisticated.

Knitted tights can also be highly decorative.  These Trasparanze Sebille tights have a sexy diamond crochet pattern running from the hips to the toes.  They will give a dressed up look to any outfit and are great for giving warmth, as well as elegance, in the evening.  No-one need know how warm and practical they actually are.

If you still can’t face wool tights but you still want to be super warm, Pretty Polly has just created these eye catching Argyle print tights, which are 70% cotton.  They’ll look just as good with a pair of sensible brogues as they will with heels, and we think they are perfect to brighten up a gloomy winter day.

Woollen tights are not just for school girls,  they are super practical but can also be stylish and sexy.

The Sun – 27/10/10

Wolford‘s Bondage tights have flown off the shelves since Cheryl Cole wore them during her performance of “Promise This” on this Sunday night’s X-Factor. But don’t worry if you missed out, because The Sun have come up with some fabulous alternatives!

After her “zebra-patterned tights” become a talking point all week, The Sun have taken a look at all the “bright and interesting legwear available this season as a way of styling up our winter wardrobes”. Taking inspiration from Fearne Cotton, Lady GaGa, Agyness Deyn and Pixie Lott they show us the best tights out there, including our very own Wolford Leopard Tights, Wolford Fence Tights, Pamela Mann Opaque Tights, Henry Holland Bandana Tights, and Jonathan Aston’s Large Spot Tights. Think opaque tights are boring? Think again!

Opaque tights – everyone has a couple of pairs in their sock drawer. They’re for looking smart at meetings and interviews during the winter, but aren’t generally very exciting, right? Wrong!

We’re here to show you that with a little style knowhow and some amazing opaque tights from some of the hottest brands in hosiery, you can create a whole new look and have people dying to copy!

Formal Opaque Tights

Let’s start with the formal. You can’t beat opaques for creating a polished appearance, plus they’ll keep your legs warm as the mercury drops!

If you want the sort you can wear all day without feeling uncomfortable, we recommend trying Wolford’s Velvet De Luxe 66 Tights. This is what hosiery should feel like! Super-thick and velvety soft, they feel like liquid on your legs, a far cry from the itchy tights we’ve all had the misfortune of wearing at some point in our lives.

We also just have to tell you about how much we adore Falke’s Pure Matt 100-denier tights. After trying out the brand-new Sapphire shade – as the name suggests, a really sumptuous blue – we are totally smitten.

Stylish Opaques

However, as we’ve already pointed out, opaque tights aren’t simply about functionality. We want them to be fun and stylish too!

For Saturday shopping trips with the girls, try teaming a plain dress with coloured opaque tights. Aristoc is a great brand that doesn’t sacrifice quality for fashion, so would be perfect for a day out like this.

If your mates are as fashion-forward as Carrie Bradshaw, opt for something like Aristoc’s Polished Tights in a bright hue like Peacock. Their shiny finish is a nod to the metallic trend that’s all the rage at present, but is toned down enough to look classy for daytime.

Alternatively, the Velveteen 60-denier Opaque Tights – which come in a range of wintry colours – will look similarly cool but in a smoother finish. We just love the Burgundy shade.

Bold Coloured Tights

When it comes to embracing new trends, we know that sometimes you want fast fashion that won’t put a strain on your purse-strings. A quick way of making your outfits fit to grace the pages of Grazia is to add cheap but cheerful coloured tights to your wardrobe.

Jonathan Aston is famed for its portfolio of bright colours which are updated each season. For a night out, why not try the futuristic look using its funky 40-denier Opaque Tights in Hyacinth? Pair them with a structured-shouldered dress a la Balmain and you’ll be the talk of the town.

A range of hot hues are also available from Pamela Mann – coral is huge this autumn and winter and would look great with a simple grey jumper dress.

Finally, special occasions. Got a winter wedding or a red-carpet-worthy event you want to impress at? No problem – may we introduce you to Falke’s Pure Matt 50-denier Opaque Tights in Off-White.

Shop For Opaque Tights

We’ve only touched the surface here, but we hope we’ve made you look at opaque tights in a whole new light. This year we’ve got more in stock than ever and most of the brands we feature make a rainbow of other colours too. Why not head to the opaque tights section of the website to investigate and overhaul your winter wardrobe today!

Happy shopping!
