Control Top Tights

With William and Kate’s imminent nuptials on everyone’s lips this week, we can barely keep a lid on the excitement about the only thing that really matters … the dress.  As she is no doubt aware, the soon to be Princess Catherine shoulders a heavy responsibility fashionwise as we’ll doubtless be seeing copycat looks for years to come.  Kate’s weight loss has also been the subject of many column inches lately – who wouldn’t try to shift a couple of pounds if your wedding was going to be watched by billions?  It is abundantly clear that she won’t need any help in the figure department.  However, as we recover from last week’s Easter Egg binge and tuck into slice of Victoria Sponge to celebrate the Royal Wedding, we might all be needing something to help pull in and firm up those wobbly bits especially if you too have weddings and important summer events in the calendar!

Control top tights are a summer essential.  Light summer dresses made of clingy fabrics require good foundations and having helping hand from a good pair of control tights can make you feel much more comfortable and confident.

For great all the way up control, you can’t do better than the Spanx in Power Line Super High Shaping Sheers.  Spanx has become synonymous with control top tights and shaping underwear and they are the go-to girls when it comes to giving your figure a little helping hand.  Famous for their shaping shorts and bodysuits, the famous Spanx control is also available with built in tights.  At 15 denier, they will give a lovely sheer look with a slight shimmer which looks great for summer (especially the nude ones) but they are knitted with the equivalent resilience of 20 denier hosiery so you get a little extra durability.  The new improved tummy panel will give you a flatter stomach whilst the looser knit at the back cradles and lifts the bottom for a lovely pert shape.   Spanx have also helpfully included a double cotton gusset so you don’t have to roll them down when you go to the loo!  Made from slick yarns that won’t stick to your clothes, no-one need ever know about the secret underneath.

If you are longing to slip into a pair of those glamorous and silky wide legged summer trousers that seem to be everywhere this season then you definitely want to make sure that your bottom is looking its best!  Try Spanx footless tights like the Spanx In Power Line Super Footless Shapers.  The tummy flattening panel also reaches just to the waist so should sit in the same place as those unforgiving high waisted palazzo pants.  What’s more, because they are footless, you can still wear those funky high wedge sandals.

Alternatively, the Aristoc Bodytoners range are effective and offer great value for money. The Aristoc Bodytoners Hourglass Toner Tights sit just under the bust line and give control down to the mid thigh and at £12 for these leg slimming tights you are certainly getting a lot of slimming and smoothing for your money.  The tighter band around the waist gives a nice hourglass shape while tummy panels flatten the stomach.  You bottom will also be gently lifted to reduce any nasty sagging.

If you only want to focus on your tummy or your hemline is too short for all those mid thigh shorts, the Aristoc Bodytoners Tummy Tuck Toner Tights have a firm control panel across the stomach which pulls it in for a much flatter look.  You’ll get a noticeable difference but you’ll still feel like you are wearing a normal pair of tights – the overall control of the high waisted tights is not for everyone and can feel a little too hot in the high summer.   Both these Bodytoners products have a 15 denier sheer leg which gives a lovely gentle sheen which will make your legs look healthy in nude and elongate and flatter your legs in black.  Finished with a touch of silk to give extra smoothness and a little touch of luxury, we’d recommend the entire Bodytoners range.

Of course if you could find a pair of tights that would shape and smooth your silhouette and help you burn calories that would be perfect right?  We couldn’t believe our luck when revolutionary hosiery brand ShaToBu announced that they had done just that.  ShaToBu have developed a pair of tights that not only shape the tummy, hips and thighs but use resistance band technology to help you burn extra calories as you move.  Initially developed by chiropractor Dr Denise Perron to help her patients exercise and tone muscles during everyday activities, the special bands in these control top tights provide resistance as you move which increases calorific burn and help you burn up to 12% more calories throughout the day.   The principle of the more you move the more you burn still applies but who can sniff at burning a few bonus calories without even trying?  Available in high waist to knee and waist to knee styles they might just be your dream tights!

This is of course just a sample of the control top tights available at, if you are trying them for the first time then I guarantee they’ll soon be part of your everyday wardrobe.  Great for fat days in winter and for clingy summer dresses so you can feel less guilty about indulging at that Royal Wedding street party this weekend!

Hot Socks for Summer

In all this warm weather, we’ve spotted a lot of sock action going on. Knee high and over knee socks in particular seem to have had a bit of a renaissance. Leading the charge in the UK is the gorgeous Eliza Doolittle who has always been a fan of accessorizing her looks with cute and quirky socks. The Jonathan Aston Floral Knee High Socks for example are VERY Eliza.

They are also doing it in Hollywood where actress and niece of Julia, Emma Roberts drew attention in her over the knee socks in LA recently. Get her look with the Jonathan Aston Over the Knee Socks teamed with a pair of funky leopard print sandals.

From Hollywood to Essex, we’ve also spotted Jessica Wright from the Only Way is Essex bravely venturing out in a pair of white knee high socks and peep toe shoes. Take a cue from Jessica and team your knee high socks with grown up details like Jessica’s pussycat bow dress and gold accessories to avoid looking too schoolgirlish.

Stylish as they undoubtedly are, I think these girls have missed a bit of a trick. Colour blocking is huge this season and coloured knee high socks are one of the easiest way to give a bit of pep and a high fashion edge to your look. Trasparenze’s Cinzia Knee High Socks come in a range of handy brights that will make your outfit pop. Don’t just take my word for it, see them in action in this fashion shoot from the Sunday Times. Lady like dresses, waist cinching belts, knee high socks and sandals- we like!

We’re dotty about Davina’s style!

In this week’s News of the World’s ‘Fabulous’ magazine, Davina looks stunning in a pair of sheer spotty tights.

Pretty Polly Naturals

When the weather gets this good I think we all have the urge to throw off our tights.  However, if your legs have spent months clad in warm woollies and trousers they are probably not quite ready for their first bare outing.  That’s were our sensational range of bare leg tights come in to even out your skin tone and give a little healthy colour to pasty legs.  For example, we’ve just taken delivery of the new Pretty Polly Naturals range which has been relaunched with brilliant timing to coincide with the summery weather.  The Pretty Polly Naturals range has been a summer bestseller for some time so faithful customers will be pleased to know that they can still get their favourite bare leg look.  However, Pretty Polly have made a couple of tweaks to the range to make it even better for Summer 2011.

They’ve added a more decorative design to the brief as well as special cooling features that you’ll be thankful for when the weather hots up.  Priced at around £5 a pair, the Pretty Polly Naturals range still represent great value for money.

The Pretty Polly Naturals 8D Sandal Toe Tights are classic summer basics.  At £4.00 each you can afford to invest in a good supply for your tights drawer to see you through the summer but the fresh and pretty new packaging also means you’ll be happy to keep a supply in your office drawer too for emergencies!

Like before, the matte finish on these tights will give a beautiful natural look to your legs.  At 8 denier they are just thick enough to give a little colour to your leg and to even out the skin tone but still thin enough not to give away the fact that you are wearing tights.  Without any ugly reinforcing across the toe to betray the secret to your flawless legs, you’ll be able to slip these on under shoes and peep toe sandals too.

The new high leg brief is decorated with an attractive daisy design but still means you can wear these tights with short skirts or shorts without any tell tale lines across the thigh.  With hot summer days in mind, Pretty Polly have made the V Line brief fully breathable but they have also added a special cooling  treatment which will cool your leg as you move and help stop you from overheating.

If that’s still not cool enough, for really hot days you can get the same Naturals bare leg look in a hold up.  They’ll feel great under swooshy knee length skirts allowing the air to flow while your legs still look great.

Open toed sandals demand a completely natural look and although you might be able to get away the Naturals Sandal Toe Tights with some styles of shoe, it’s not going to work with all of them.   That age old dilemma of whether to sacrifice your toes (well the look of them anyway) or your tights is history because the Pretty Polly Naturals range includes Open Toe tights.  They are great for events like summer weddings, when you want to look your absolute best but you also want to show off your pedicure.  You’ll get the same benefits of the Naturals products to your toe line where they secured with two toe loops that stop them riding up over the foot.  The loops fit around the big and little toes so, as long as your sandals have some kind of a strap across the toe, they’ll be covered up nicely.

If you are wearing a clingy summer fabric like bias cut silk or satin you’ll probably welcome a little bit of control over your tummy, bottom and thighs.  Pretty Polly have introduced a new Secret Slimmer to the Naturals Range which will give a medium level of control to firm up those annoying, problem areas but with a better than bare leg that won’t give away the secret to your great figure.

Last, but by no means least in the Naturals range are the Pretty Polly Naturals 8 denier Oiled Tights.  With their shiny finish, they give the look of just moisturised legs which will last all day.  The sheen gives a wonderful healthy bronzed look to your legs so you will look like you have just jetted back from somewhere exotic.  Wear the Naturals Sandal Toe Tights for spring then move on to these Oiled Tights when summer really gets going!  With the same “stay cool” finish as the other Naturals products, heatwaves will hold no fear for you!

Have a great bank holiday weekend.

Are Tights the new Festival Essential?

The Coachella music festival has been big fashion news this week. Some of Hollywood’s coolest stars have been pictured partying at the world famous festival and enjoying the spectacular line up and the enviable, balmy California weather. Lately in the UK, we’ve been doing well weatherwise but who knows what the weather will be like when our own festival season really kicks off in the next few weeks.

I’m too excited about going to the Isle of Wight festival in June. So after seeing the pics from Coachella I just couldn’t help (admittedly rather prematurely) planning my festival wardrobe.

I’ll definitely be taking these Miss Oroblu Darling Tights with me to wear with denim shorts, along with the Jonathan Aston Tattoo Print Tights and my faithful Henry Holland Suspender Tights. That’s three completely different looks and they take up virtually no space in my bag so plenty of room for other festival essentials!

They also slip neatly into my little festival handbag so you can go bare legged all day and then slip your tights on in the evening when the temperature drops. Tights are also way more comfy than jeans when it rains. Sure you’ll get wet just the same but when the rain stops falling your tights will dry really fast so you won’t have to suffer damp legs all day.

I can’t help you if the rain falls so hard that you end up in a Glastonbury style mud bath – then it’s every man or woman for him or herself – but lots of our tights will look cute with wellies and a pair of substantial socks!

Suspender Tights

Just when I thought that there couldn’t be any more variations on the suspender tights design, we’ve had a delivery of a whole new set of suspender and mock hold up tights from Pamela Mann!  Check them out on our Suspender Tights page.

I’m particularly keen on the Pamela Mann Chain Garter Tights which have a sexy chain and charm design around the mid thigh.  Managing to be both cute and fantastically suggestive, I think these are great second or third date tights!   I am also loving the Pamela Mann Chain Link Suspender Tights.  These 40 denier tights with a suspender design feature a funky chain detail which sits on the inner and outer thighs so they are perfect for wearing with side split skirts.

We might have more varieties of suspender tights that ever before but don’t worry, we won’t stop doing your old favorites.  The Pretty Polly Suspender Tights continue to be bestsellers.  Their simple, unembellished suspender design has almost become a classic look.  Such an easy way to turn a plain outfit into something way more alluring, no wonder you guys can’t get enough of them.

Of course, I couldn’t close this piece without a mention for the guy that really made this trend fly.  Henry Holland is one of the UK’s coolest designers and his House of Holland range for Pretty Polly is as popular with our customers as it is with celebrities.  Dancing on Ice contender Cloe Madeley is the latest to be spotted sporting the House of Holland Chain Suspenders but they have also been spotted on Pixie Lott and Ellie Goulding.  With their distinctive glittering suspender design, if you are putting together a headline grabbing outfit of your own you NEED these tights!

Keep rocking your suspender tights and have a great weekend!

Trinny and Susannah Magic Knickers

It might have been a while since they hit the big time with their TV show “What not to Wear” but Trinny and Susannah still somehow manage to divide the nation.  They might not be everyone’s cup of tea but, love them or loathe them, they are invariably right.  Dressing for your shape and making the best of your assets is the key to looking good.  Period.  However, the girls also appreciate that sometimes your figure needs a little helping hand.  They have always been great advocates of good foundation garments.  Who could forget that trip to Rigby and Peller with the highly reluctant Jo Brand?  Bras are important but Trinny and Susannah have also been great cheerleaders for the benefits of shapewear.

Trinny and Susannah are so in love with shapewear that they have produced their own range of what they call their “Magic Knickers”.  No empty celebrity endorsements for these girls, they have worked closely with world renowned Belgian hosiery manufacturer, Cette, at every stage of the design and manufacturing process and provided their expertise and experience of what women really want from their shapewear.

The first thing they wanted to do was make them seam free so their products would be virtually invisible underneath clothing.   For this reason they are knitted in a continuous ring and the shaping effect comes from varying the tension in the thread as they are knitted.  This creates tighter stitches which give strong compression next to looser stitches which stretch to accommodate your curves.  You can clearly see the tighter knit across the tummy area and the looser knit that accommodates the curve of your bottom.  I really like the fact that you can also see other bands of tighter knit that are designed to cradle and lift the bottom and pull in the tummy.  You can really see your shapewear working for its money!

Probably the most popular of Trinny and Susannah’s “Magic Knickers” is the Bum, Tum and Thigh Reducer.   With the top sitting just below the bust line, these high waisted shorts finish above the knee to give you all over control but with more concentrated compression on the tummy.  A pair of cute little pockets at the back will accommodate the curve of your bottom whilst supportive bands lift and separate the cheeks slightly for a super pert bum.  Trust me, this looks so much better than it sounds and it eliminates saddle bags brilliantly.

The tighter knit also provides a support band for the lower back which will improve posture.  It might be the oldest trick in the book but, as those “Before” and “After” photos that Trinny and Susannah use to such great effect will testify, just standing up straight will instantly make you look slimmer.  A tighter band around the waist pulls in to create the hourglass shape are all trying to achieve.

If you favour a short skirt or you only really want compression focussed on your tummy, try Trinny and Susannah’s Tummy Flattening Bikini Brief.  It has the same tighter waist band and graduated compression around the body as the Bum, Tum and Thigh Reducer and the brief bottoms will still provide firming around your behind.  However, as you would expect from a pair of style gurus of their standing, Trinny and Susannah have not neglected the issue of the dreaded VPL.  These briefs have a complex combination of tighter and looser knits which will prevent any digging in around the leg opening or any visible panty lines.   In terms of compression, the girls compare this product to the Spanx Slim Cognito High Leg Shaping Bodysuit.  In reality, it is probably not quite as strong but it is still effective.  It has to be said too, that at £35 it certainly compares favourably on price.  You’ll certainly get a lot of compression for your money with the Trinny and Susannah range.

With VPL neatly dealt with, Trinny and Susannah have managed to tackle another one of our worst sartorial problems.  Especially if you have a big bust, you will probably wish you weren’t so familiar with sight of lumps and bumps around your bra line.  However, as Trinny and Susannah will tell you at every available opportunity, you also want to make sure that you are well supported at all times.  The All in One Body Smoother and the All in one Body Shaper come high up the back to smooth out any nasty rolls of fat you might find there.  Because the front is completely open however, you will also be able to wear your own bra.  With the same tummy flattening, waist cinching and bottom shaping qualities of their other products, with the all in ones you can be sure that you won’t have any uncovered gaps to make you feel uncomfortable.  The Trinny and Susannah All in One Body Shaper has shorts to just above the knee.  The open gusset is a welcome feature which means you don’t need to struggle out of the suit every time you go to the ladies.

The All in One Body Smoother is a shaping slip with a skirt which comes to just above the knee.  Although the skirt will still give you a smoothing effect down to the mid thigh, the skirt is stretchy enough so that it won’t restrict your movement.

Ok they won’t make you a size 10 if you are not a size 10, but smoothing out unsightly bulges, pulling in the waist and lifting and shaping the bottom can easily make you appear a dress size smaller than you are.  As the girls themselves would say, the outfit is important but it is only as good as its foundations.

White Dress, Black Tights

I have noticed a curious phenomenon over the last few weeks.  I suppose it was inevitable.  Little white dresses, especially in lace, are one of spring/summer’s key pieces but changeable British weather makes this trend tricky to wear until July or August so the obvious solution is a pair of nice thick tights.   White dress and black opaque tights combinations have sneeked their way on to some of our best dressed ladies of late.  It might have historically been a style no no but if Kate Moss says it’s OK I guess it’s OK!

If you are going to copy this look, I’d advise going for something matt and high quality like Kate Moss and Emily Blunt.  The Falke Pure Matt 100 Denier Tights in Black should do the trick as they give great coverage.  Pamela Mann’s 120 Denier Tights will also give you a good solid colour.  The rule with this look is, the higher the denier the better.  You want to avoid any leg showing through your tights. Kate Middleton’s sheer black tights for example make her otherwise flawless outfit look a little dated.

Lastly, definitely make sure you wear with black heels to make your legs look longer and slimmer.  Any other colour, and particularly white, will make your legs look shorter and cheapen your outfit.

Let us know what you think of this look or, if you think you can give Kate and Emily a run for their money in the style stakes, post your own photos on our Facebook pages.  We always love seeing how you style your tights!

Colour Blocking

I’m so pleased that the sun is out.  The conditions are now right to start trying out those wonderful new summer brights.

Colour blocking is a huge trend for this season but I have to admit that I am still finding it a challenge to get out of my muted winter colours.    Thanks then to the guys at for providing me with some inspiration with their colourful Sping/Summer fashion shoot.  They’ve also used our very own Trasparenze Cinzia Knee High Socks in Paprika with acid yellow wedge sandals to style this deliciously bright look.  I’ll definitely be copying this look and wearing eyewateringly bright socks to give flash of colour under those maxi skirts and dresses.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine,

Summer Wedding Essentials: Toeless Hold Ups

We’ve had them in stock for a couple of weeks but I am just getting excited about the new Shelina Toeless Hold Ups.   It might be a little early in the season for toeless looks it is true, but wedding season begins in earnest next month and I have got outfits to plan!

Falke’s Shelina range is really popular with our customers, and with the rest of the MyTights team, as they give a great bare leg look.  You get all the benefits of wearing tights – they even out your skin tone brilliantly and give you a subtle and flattering shimmer that makes your legs look healthy but natural.  The beauty of these tights is that it doesn’t look like you are wearing any tights at all.  Following the success of the toeless tights and responding to popular demand Falke have brought out this brilliant product in hold up form!

The Falke Shelina Toeless tights have flat seams so you can’t see them under clothing but, if you are wearing a figure hugging outfit and want to eliminate any chance of lines or bulges on the body, then these hold ups are a great alternative.

I think the toeless hold ups are an especially good bet for summer weddings.  Whether you are a guest or the bride, you’ll more than likely be in the same outfit all day so they’ll keep you cool – a really good thing if want to dance later on.  What’s more you can wear open toed sandals with no tell tale lines or seams to show and give away the secret to your flawless legs!

I’ve still got one more outfit to find before May – dress, shoes, hat (maybe) – but I at least the leg wear will not be a challenge!
