Stocking up?

We love stockings! These days stockings are often overlooked in favour of the far more practical tights or hassle free hold ups, but if you’re one of the many who have switched from stockings or even never tried them, you could be missing a trick.  The ultimate way to inject some vintage glamour into your hosiery drawer, every woman should own a pair as part of her staple wardrobe.

Not only do they look amazing and make you feel sexy and sophisticated, wearing them with a suspender belt is a great option if you love the look of hold ups but are worried about them rolling or falling down.  And if stockings are inextricably linked in your mind with thick, ugly hosiery that looks far too obvious and is scratchy on your skin, think again – stockings have gone through exactly the same regeneration process as tights, so now you can get styles that are super comfy and look fabulous.

Sexy sheer stockings are perfect if you want a bare leg look for the office – try the Oroblu Secret 15 Stockings, which have a pretty lace top and come in a variety of shades so you can get one perfect for your skintone.  Or else opt for a shiny stocking like the perennially popular Pretty Polly Nylons Stockings which have a mega shiny finish that will give you the glossiest pins in town!

For a hot date your LBD is crying out for classic back seam stockings which have a gorgeous retro feel – plus seams are wonderfully flattering as they make your pins appear longer AND slimmer!  We love the Jonathan Aston Seam and Heel Lycra Stockings, which come in black or nude and have a purse friendly price, too.  Opaque stockings are the way forward when the weather turns colder and you need to start covering up a little more.  The Trasparenze Sandra 70D Stockings come in 4 classic shades and have a matte finish that goes with everything you own.  The 70 denier construction mean these will get you through frosty mornings with ease – plus they feel incredibly soft on your skin.

Of course if you love the look but really can’t bear to fumble around with a suspender belt, Charnos have made your life easy with the new addition to their boudoir collection – the All In One Suspender Stockings.  Featuring stockings already attached to a suspender belt that you simply need to clip on around your waist, you really haven’t got any excuses now!  Whether you go for sheer or opaque, fashion or plain, the humble stocking will add a dash of vintage charm to your look – so start stocking up now for a bit of wow factor for your wardrobe.

Sheer Tights: Dos & Don’ts

MyTights exclusively provides Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon with tights for the show, and we love how polished and on trend she always looks.  As we look at how her legwear has gone wrong in the past and how fab she looks with the correct sheers, we thought it was time to remind you – and ourselves –about the dos and don’t of sheer tights…

- Spend some time choosing the correct shade – you can afford to go slightly darker for a sunkissed look or exactly match your skintone, but don’t go too pale as it will look odd, as poor Alesha discovered.  Falke have redeveloped their range of skintone shades offered with a dermatologist, so there’s no excuse to not get the perfect shade for your skin.

- Choose the correct size – baggy knees and wrinkly ankles will ruin the bare leg look.  Get the right size and you won’t spend the whole day hoisting them up or readjusting on your legs – use the size guides if you’re not sure, as every brand is bound to fit different shapes differently.

- Think about your outfit and choose your sheers accordingly.  You don’t want to opt for a boxer brief style if you’re wearing tiny shorts or a micro mini, so go sheer to waist so no visible reinforcement will peek out.  Similarly if you’re planning on wearing peep toes consider going for an open toe style, or at the very least a sheer toe to avoid them looking too obvious.

- Opt for a shiny finish if you want a bare leg look – glossy products like the Aristoc Ultra range are super glam but obvious, too.  If you’re worried about chunky calves or less-than-svelte thighs you should also avoid shiny tights as they can be unflattering.  Matte tights make the legs look slimmer, but for the best natural look the ideal finish is a slight sheen that will mimic the natural glow of your skin.

- Settle for the wrong shade or rush the buying process – think about what you need from your tights before you buy them.  Do you need a comfy style you can wear all day?  You might want to think about getting tights with a cotton gusset.  Wearing to drinks under a slinky dress?  Control top tights might be a good option that will slim as well as flatter your pins.

- Be scared to try something new – innovation in hosiery is happening all the time which means trying something different to your usual sheers could make all the difference.  Some styles use bicomponent yarns, which give a flawless finish, cool feel and are more durable than their ultra sheer appearance suggests, while ladder resist styles can make your life easier with a little added durability for strength in the face of hectic schedules.

Emma Stone Scores a Hat Trick in New York

Mary-Portas-sheer-shaperActress Emma Stone pulled off a commendable performance when she was snapped on the set of her upcoming movie, Birdman, nailing three trends at once.  Teaming a khaki canvas jacket with denim cut offs over battered looking black sheers (complete with hole and VERY visible ladder), the result was a grungy look a far cry from her usual pulled together, chic style. It

shouldn’t have worked, yet somehow it did.

Khaki and denim shorts are staples season after season – but black sheer tights are also back this season, with loads of celebs shunning their thicker opaques for the sexy style, including Sarah Jessica Parker and Miranda Kerr.  But unless you’re going to attempt the grungy look as modelled by Emma, we suggest you’re a bit more careful with your sheers to avoid runs and snags.

It’s a sad fact of life that with sheer hosiery comes the risk of ladders, but there ARE ways to prevent damage.  Most snags occur when you’re yanking your sheers up or taking them off at the end of the day, as this is when they’re pulled around the most.  Care for your sheers by wearing hosiery gloves when putting them on or taking them off, or at the very least make sure your nails are filed with no jagged edges.  Choosing a style with a boxer brief design is safer than a sheer to waist, as there is reinforcement around the part you pull up or down.

Alternatively you could opt for ladder resist tights.  Although they don’t guarantee you won’t end up with a snag, they are generally more durable than your average sheer and any holes you do get won’t turn into an unsightly ladder, thanks to the clever yarn technology used.  No more embarrassing runs in your tights, and no more clear nail varnish stowed in your handbag in case of emergencies!

When washing your hosiery, ladder resist or not, make sure you use a hosiery bag which will protect your sheers from damage, and wash on a cool wash.  Don’t dry on radiators or in the tumble drier, as the heart will damage the elastane fibres in the hosiery.

We can’t promise your beloved sheers will last forever, but if you follow these steps they’ll be around for a lot longer, seeing you through anything your day has to throw at you… Emma Stone, take note!

Jesy Nelson in Fishnets and OTK Socks!

Never a disappointment, the girls of Little Mix are always catching our attention with their eclectic fashion choices. A few days ago, the girls greeted fans outside the BBC Radio One and yet again Jesy Nelson turned our heads as she sported black over the knee socks on top of her fishnets that we saw in the Little Mix’s recent music video, ‘How You Doin?’ Combined with her cut-off shorts, it was hard to look away from Jesy’s fab legs and her amazing choice of legwear. Always pushing the fashion boundaries, Jesy opted for the sexy fishnet look while layering black over the knee socks to add a cosy and warm appearance.

Taking note from the singer, over the knee socks are perfect to jazz up summer dresses during the spring and approaching sunny months. A comfy look that provides enough coverage for chilly summer nights, over the knee socks can add a naughty, but nice, super chic look. You can wear them on top of tights for extra warmth, jeans, or just on your legs when the weather heats up. For the over the knee look, try out these Pamela Mann Over Knee Sock, which are great if you want the summer look, but the temperatures are just not warming up enough for your sundresses!  Try them out with a summer dress or a leather skirt for a more edgy style. Or if you want to fake the look, the Pretty Polly Over the Knee Secret Socks are a perfect option to layer with ease.  No matter the outfit, the over the knee socks will look fabulous with anything and make your outfit fashion forward. Match them

with your favourite pumps or boots, the over the knee trend will not be going out of style anytime soon.

Follow the singer’s lead and show off your gorgeous legs by grabbing a pair of over the knee socks.
