Thick Black Opaques: A Style Battle!

Emma Willis looking characteristically fab! Generally as far as winters go, this one hasn’t been too bad. Sure, we’ve rarely been able to leave the house without at least a few layers, but we’ve admittedly done pretty well. That is, until this week of course! Thousands of us across the country have been hit with a dreaded cold snap, bringing with it a blanket of snow and forcing hundreds of schools to shut down for the day. While celebrities usually have a knack of being able to wear sheer tights or bare legs all year round, it seems that the current cold weather has proved too much for two of MyTights style favourites. Both Fearne Cotton and Emma Willis this week opted to wrap up warm, stepping out in a pair of thick black opaque tights, albeit channelling rather different looks. But the question that’s on all of our lips; who wore it best?Fearne Cotton at BBC Radio 1 Studios, London, Britain - 23 Jan 2015

Celebrity Big Brother presenter and all round golden girl Emma Willis braved this week’s live eviction in a stunning floral PVC jacket, high neck burgundy mini and chic suede heels, finishing off her quirky look with a pair of thick black opaques. While we don’t think Emma’s jacket is wearable for us normal folk, we can’t help but admire her gorgeous ensemble, and we particularly loved her choice of burgundy dress, which nailed the trend for block colours perfectly. Opting for a pair of black heels also gave her bottom half a uniformed appearance, showing off her slim legs brilliantly. We salute you Emma! Moving on now to Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton, who wore her black opaques as part of a more relaxed daytime look. Protecting herself from the elements in a glamorous leopard print coat, the TV personality wore a somewhat unusual (although stylish) mix of a pastel knitted jumper and matching dress in a floaty chiffon fabric. Finishing around the mid-calf, her dress allowed for a hint of her thick black opaques to shine though. Typical of Fearnes style, her outfit was certainly original, but we can’t help think it had a little too much going on to pip Emma to the post.

This round goes to the lovely Mrs Willis!

Semi-opaque Tights: Who Wore It Best?

The trusty black opaque has reigned supreme for years, and with good reason. Chic, versatile and great for locking in the warmth, it’s no surprise that they tend to be the go-to option for most women across the country. But, in recent seasons, we’ve noticed a somewhat changing trend. While black opaques are undoubtedly still popular, it seems that the tide may have turned, and wearers of hosiery are instead opting for more elegant semi-opaque or sheer styles. Anyone who follows fashion will know that you can always count on celebrities to be at the forefront of any breaking trend, and never more than so than this week, with no less than three fashionistas stepping out in an elegant semi-opaque leg. Anne Hathaway, Cara Delevingne and Nicole Kidman were all papped in the hosiery staple, albeit channelling very different looks. Which begs the question – semi opaque tights: who wore it best?

Anne and her gorgeous look!

Anne and her gorgeous look!

Starting off with MyTights favourite Anne, the Hollywood actress opted for black semi-opaque tights for her interview on the Today show, wearing her chic legwear with a monochrome patterned mini-dress. We think Anne looked fabulous (let’s face it, she always does!); her elegant legwear provided the perfect base for her busy dress, coming together to form a style that would work from day to play with ease. What do you think of her look?

Next up in the ring we have model of the moment Cara Delevingne, who went for all out-glamour in a flapper style mini-dress. Finishing off her fringed look with suede black heels, tailored blazer and simple black semi-opaques, the 22 year old looked stunning. Her chic ensemble proved that you don’t always need statement legwear to stand out, and we may be biased, but we loved the elegant finishing touch her tights added to her evening look. In fact, we’re going to say it… she may have just pipped Anne Hathaway to the post!

Cara's Fabulous Flapper Look!

Cara’s Fabulous Flapper Look!

But it’s not over yet; as yet another Hollywood starlet also went for a semi-opaque style this week, the contender in question this time being Nicole Kidman. Wrapping up warm and landing at LAX Airport, the 47 year old wore a gorgeous polkadot dress, black pashmina scarf, completing her winter style with black semi-opaques and chic leather brogues. Yet another super-elegant look, proving just how versatile semi-opaque tights are…

So, who wins? After much deliberation, we’ve come to our decision. While we love all three looks in their own individual way, it has to be Cara Delevingne!

Do you agree – why not have your say below?

Alexa Chung Grabbing The Leg Limelight Yet Again!

Another day, another fabulous outfit from model and all-round socialite Alexa Chung. It seems that rarely a month goes by without the 31 year old featuring in our blog in some way or another, which has lead us to the extremely important executive decision. It’s official; Alexa Chung has the best dressed legs in the business! You heard it here first people.

Alexa Chung

Stepping out with fellow fashionista Daisy Lowe at a high-end jeans launch, this week saw Alexa wearing a fashion-forward denim dress, finishing off her quirky look with a pair of heeled boots, and the pièce de résistance (in our eyes at least), a pair of sheer embellished tights. While we may be slightly biased, being a hosiery company and all, we can’t take our eyes off Alexa’s gorgeous legwear. It really is amazing how a single pair of tights can make an otherwise fairly casual ensemble look THAT glamorous. And good news if you’re a fan; while her dress may not be a viable option to us normal folk, you too can channel an ‘Alexa-esque’ look with the brilliant range of glitter and high shine tights on offer at MyTights!

Trasparenze Vlinder Tights

Trasparenze Vlinder Tights

For a style replica, you shouldn’t look past the Vlinder Tights from Italian brand Trasparenze. Albeit slightly more subtle than Alexa’s herself, these sheer tights feature an all over glittery fleck, catching the light as you walk and giving you a truly glamorous look. A denim dress may not be in your repertoire, but they’ll look equally as chic with a classic cocktail dress and heeled ankle boots.

Moulin Rouge Metallic Seam Tights

Moulin Rouge Metallic Seam Tights

Another brilliant option are the Charnos Lurex Spot Opaque Tights. This time set against a 40 denier leg for a bit of added coverage, these matte tights have an array of symmetrically placed glittery dots for true understated glamour. Ideal for a night on the town or equally for a dinner date, these are an excellent place to start if you’re a beginner to all this high shine stuff.

If hold ups are more your thing, you too can channel a sparkly legwear look with the Charnos 75 Ava Hold Ups. A play on the popular backseam trend, these 20 denier hold ups have a unique embellished seam made up of individual floral motifs and finished off with 8cm lace tops. Or for a more traditional backseam, opt for the Moulin Rouge Metallic Seam Tights, with their super slender and sultry backseam and black sheer leg. Available with both a gold and silver seam to complement your shoes and jewellery!

See you next week, Alexa!

Aristoc Ultra Shine 10D Tights

Whilst we may still be shivering into our onesies and hot water bottles, the turn of the New Year means that it’s time to start considering our spring/summer wardrobes. And in the world of hosiery that means one thing… sheer tights! Here at MyTights, we love the elegant look that sheers can offer, giving your pins a subtle look and some coverage when you’re not feeling brave enough to expose a bare leg! And we’re not alone, with the likes of Kate Middleton, Alexa Chung and Rihanna all being advocates of the movement. Well, if it’s good enough for them…

Last week, The Guardian even featured the trend on their fashion blog, calling on the expertise of none other than MyTights founder, Laura Godsal, who revealed that sales of sheers are up by 13% this winter already. She added that ‘Whereas sheers and semi-sheers in recent years have been unfashionable, now you walk down the street and see women of all ages wearing them, with black being the hot favourite.’ With this in mind, we thought it would be a great idea to compile a selection of our favourite sheer tights, so all our lovely customers can find a look that’s perfect for them!

The budget friendly – you simply can’t go wrong with the Aristoc Ultra Shine 10D Tights, amongst our bestsellers and coming with a glamorous shiny finish and choice of shades. Or opt for the Charnos Run Resist Sheer Tights if a matte look is more your thing…

New Ways to Wear Your Tights

Are you someone who wears the same 7 skirt/dress and tights combinations through the winter because of your limited scope of outfits that keep you warm? We at MyTights love finding innovative ways to wear our favourite tights, especially when it inspires us to change up our bland, everyday winter wardrobes. Through much internet browsing (and Pinterest hunting) I have compiled the perfect list of ways to change up your boring opaques-skirt combination and try some tights under ripped jeansdaring new outfit ideas.

  1. Lace/Patterned Tights + Ripped Jeans > This look has been all over the ‘Pinterest-sphere’ as a new, updated way to wear ripped jeans without looking like a slob. To achieve this look, simply wear your favourite pair of lace tights or patterned tights under your ripped jeans. Some of my favourite tights to pair with this look are the Jonathan Aston Sweet Roses Lace Tights, Trasparenze Sitar Tights, and Jonathan Aston Katusha Tights.
  2. Tights + Shorts > Dig up your shorts out of the bottom of your closets, ladies! Many Bloggers and Celebs alike have been using this trend to keep their summer wardrobe lasting through the cold winter months. Denim or printed, any shorts may be used for this trend. Plus, literally any pair of tights you may have lying around can be used. Pair some opaque tights with your printed shorts to channel your inner fashionista, or go for the causal denim shorts look with any pair of tights you desire.
  3. Tights as Pants > Okay, okay I know this is a hard NO in the moral fashion world… but hear me out. I’m not asking you to go literal with this trend and have your bottom fully exposed à la Rihanna or Lady Shorts_and_tights_slob_or_snobGaga. Pair a large, oversized t-shirt or flannel (that covers your bottom, of course!) with a thick pair of opaque tights. This look is both comfortable and when accessorized correctly, looks fabulous as well. Looking fabulous AND comfortable is never as easy thing to achieve… so try this look out! I promise the general public will not judge your ‘tights as pants’ choice.
  4. Over The Knee Socks > Please tell me I am not the only person obsessed with this look! Thigh high socks are back in trend, and they’re here to hopefully stay. Pair these socks with anything you’d usually wear tights with – dresses, shorts. skirts- and you will understand the obsession. This look may not keep you as warm as tights do (disclaimer), but the little bit of exposed skin is very much worth the updated look. Plus! If you get cold, layer a pair of sheer tights underneath your socks for that little bit of added warmth… it looks just as wonderful.

So throw out your usual rotation of winter outfits and change things up with these new, and different outfit ideas.

Oh Miley! How To Recreate Mileys Unorthodox Legwear Look

Queen of controversy, global pop sensation Miley Cyrus sure knows how to get people talking, doesn’t she? And it appears that any publicity is good publicity, as recent week have seen the Wrecking Ball singer taking the internet by storm with her new advert for Italian hosiery brand Golden Lady. Wearing next-to-nothing, the 21 year old danced to her new single Get It Right alongside a giant stuffed teddy bear (we don’t understand the link, either!), looking as if she was having a fabulous time in her pink sheer tights. However, as fans of Miley have come to expect, it’s never that straightforward, with the star then proceeding to rip the teddy bear into shreds, before a series of legwear changes and more, quite frankly odd, frolicking. Despite the strange concept, our eyes were of course drawn to her tights, and plenty of tights there were, with candy pink sheers, black sheers, and bright red opaques all taking centre stage!5th dec miley light pink

If you want to recreate Miley’s legwear look, a great starting point are the Jonathan Aston Sheer Coloured Tights. As well as being available in vibrant fuschia, these 15 denier tights also come in 18 other shades – every colour of the rainbow! Or for a softer pink, the Jonathan Aston 40D Opaque Tights have a candy pink option, which is great when you want something a little more understated, yet retaining a flirty edge.

5th dec miley redA real capsule piece, every woman should own a pair of classic black sheers. Timeless and elegant, they’re a permanent fixture on the catwalk, and a firm favourite amongst numerous of our style crushes, namely Kate Middleton! While Miley’s look admittedly isn’t as polished as Kate’s, there’s no denying her black sheers looked great. To channel this look without breaking the bank, we love the Pretty Polly Nylons, with their 10 denier leg and super shiny finish – perfect for a glamorous evening look! Or if you want something a little more luxurious, opt for refined quality of the Wolford Individual 10 Tights – the epitome of elegance.

Last but not least, we loved Miley’s red opaque look. Coloured hosiery is a great way to jazz up a tired wardrobe favourite, and good news – MyTights has a fantastic selection of red tights to choose from. The pick of the bunch are the Falke Cotton Touch Tights, which are lined with cotton for super-snug pins. Or for something a little more affordable, head to everyday favourites Pamela Mann!

Hats off to you Miley!

taylor swiftAnother week, another blog about the legwear choices of global pop sensation Taylor Swift. This is becoming a bit of a habit, isn’t it? This week, she was papped leaving the Cath Kidston store in Covent Garden in a lace roll neck jumper, tartan skirt and the pièce de résistance (for us at least), a pair of stripy sheer tights. The MyTights team have been cooing over her legwear ever since the photos hit the press earlier this week, and for good reason. 3rd dec anneLes Miserables star Anne Hathaway seems to have an endless supply of unfeasibly chic outfits in her repertoire, doesn’t she? The nicest lady in Hollywood, and all round style icon, this week stepped out in a fabulously chic outfit, on a rare break from her week of non-stop press for latest film Interstellar. Teaming her V-neck blouse with statement jewellery and a velvet mini, the real star of the show was undoubtedly her legwear; an elegant pair of sheer polkadot tights, which have been causing quite the stir in MyTights HQ.

Polkadot tights are a super-cute and playful alternative to standard hosiery when you want to add some interest to an otherwise plain outfit.  A key fixture on the catwalks in recent years, polkadot tights can work seamlessly from day to play, and have adorned the legs of countless celebrities in recent years. Embrace Your Opaques: Why Bare Legs in Winter Are a No

Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights

Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights

After months of cutting back on the carbs and ensuring our pins are hair-free and beautifully moisturised, winter is finally here. At last – time to lean back, reach for the biscuit tin and embrace our opaque tights, right? Well, if the recent legwear choices of high-profile celebrities are anything to go by, wrong. It would seem that winter warming opaques and wool tights are out, in favour of natural bare legs, with The Daily Mail reporting that the likes of Victoria Beckham and Suki Waterhouse at the forefront of this, quite frankly, ludicrous trend. The MyTights team have been shaking their heads in disbelief ever since hearing rumours of this fad. Sure, bare legs are fine for A-list celebrities with a chauffeur on standby and the money to spend on daily trips to the beauty salon. But what about us normal folk who crave warm legs on our commute to the office? And why wouldn’t we want to take advantage of the wonderfully chic winter legwear on offer? To convince you all that wrapping up warm is the way to go, we’ve compiled a list of the most stylish thick and winter tights around!

  1. Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights – at their best teamed with denim shorts and a cable knit jumper, these stylish matte tights are available in a range of hot colours and have a 55% wool composition, for the toastiest pins around. So on-trend that Cara Delevigne was recently seen on the front cover of Harper’s Bazaar in a similar pair! Well, if I must…
  2. Oroblu Miracle Tights – cute plaid print meets winter warmer with these 80 denier fashion tights from Oroblu. Ideal for jumping on board to the heritage trend, opt for these if you’re looking for cosy and stand out hosiery to take you from day to play.
  3. Wolford Zip Tights adding new dimensions to the meaning of fashion statement, these Wolford tights are a revamp of the classic Wolford De Luxe 66, given a maximum impact makeover thanks to a stunning zip embellishment that runs from the ankle to mid thigh!
