Spring/Summer 2012: Everything you need to know about the Top Trends this season…

MyTights.com was lucky enough to attend an event last week where we heard a talk from Jessica Markwood, of fashion website osoyou.com, on the key trends for SS12.  We’ve pulled together a round-up of the key trends this season and how to wear them…

PRINTS: AS SEEN AT D&G

This spring it’s not just about the trend for florals that comes round each year (although hang on to your floral accessories to team with pastel basics).  But there are new, bolder prints around, such as abstract graphics and scarf print, as well as quirky tropical prints.

1920S: AS SEEN AT MARCHESA

Hurah!  It’s time to dig out your drop waist dresses again, because the 1920s is back for another season.  For the ultra-hip, you might want to try the pajama look for a new take on the 1920s trend.  Or if you’re not quite there, 1920s staples like embellishment, fringing and super-luxe fabrics like chiffon and silk in neutral colours like pale gold and dusty pink will do the trick nicely, too.

SPORTS LUXE: AS SEEN AT ALEXANDER WANG

This trend can be quite tricky to pull off if you don’t really know what you’re doing, but once you get the idea it’s really easy.  Just think clean lines and lots of white with flashes of neon and sports fabrics, but don’t go overboard.  For example, perk up a beautifully cut white linen shift with Emilio Cavallini’s Neon Seamed Sheers – and get some high wedge trainers to make the look work for day and night.

Get the Look: Check out the entire Spring/Summer Emilio Cavallini range for eye popping designs in neon shades!

TRIBAL: AS SEEN AT MISSONI

Tribal comes back every summer and so it’s a great trend to invest in, rather than going for cheap basics.  Tribal inspired prints look great when layered with white cotton and tan leather – and old season maxi dresses/skirts, waistcoats and peasant blouses can all be dug out for another round in the fashion ring.

Get the Look: Emilio Cavallini Ethnic Patterned Tights

UNDERWATER: AS SEEN AT CHANEL

This surreal trend is perhaps the most exciting this season, partly thanks to Karl Lagerfeld’s amazing sea-scape at the Chanel SS 12 show.  With this trend, you can (finally!) rock sequins for daytime – blue and silver work best – and team them with pale pastel colours in sheer, chiffony fabrics.  And anything with pearls goes – as demonstrated by the Chanel models’ pearl belts, necklaces and hairpins.  Romantic spring styling at its best!

Get the Look: The Bebaroque Tigerlily 80 Denier Tights are sparkly and perfect in purple for creating an underwater vibe, or to modernise the pearl trend take a look at the Henry Holland Pearly Suspender Tights.  Failing that, anything in blue or silvery grey will complete your look to perfection!

AND COMING UP FOR AW 12…

The Saturdays Wear MyTights Tights on Tour!

The Saturdays are one of our favourite girlbands ever, so imagine our excitement when they decided to wear the super cool Pamela Mann fishnet tights supplied by MyTights.com on their sellout tour!  Fishnets have come a long way over the last few years – relegated to the back of our wardrobes for being too trashy and/or the sole preserve of high kicking jazz dancers, they’ve emerged again in recent months, with Kate Moss appearing at the British fashion awards in a fishnet dress in November and Cara Delevigne sporting fishnet tights on the Oscar de la Renta Autumn/Winter catwalk last month.

Nude fishnets are the way forward for working this look for the spring.  They’ll look perfect with your pastels, and other celebs are getting in on the trend, too – we spied Zooey Deschanel two days ago at a New Girl press event wearing nude fishnets with her sweet summer dress.  Fishnets are ideal for the warmer weather as they give your legs a bit of coverage but allow you to keep cool, too.

The Saturdays prove that nude fishnets are the perfect with other upcoming trends, too.  Rochelle paired hers with neon pink for a sports luxe look, while Una worked the season’s hottest (and most challenging) colour combo – orange and purple.  Meanwhile, Vanessa and Mollie teamed theirs with sparkling silver sequins in a subtle nod to the aquatic trend as seen on the Chanel SS12 catwalk.

And the best news of all?  You can get these exact Pamela Mann fishnets for a teeny tiny £5!  If nude is a bit too subtle for your liking, they come in a huge range of colours including some summery pastel shades that will perk up your plain sundresses.  Or for something more outlandish, from seamed styles to cute mesh anklets, take a look at the entire range of fishnets.  After all, as they say, there are plenty more fish in the sea…

Fishing for new looks with Henry Holland

Your legs can apparently reveal what your mind wants to do  – at least that’s what psychologists say. So, with that in mind, Henry Holland must surely want us to go fishing in his tights – fishing for new looks, that is!

Channeling his recent trend of using your legs as a fashion focal point, Holland’s playful new designs have all been transferred onto cheeky fishnet tights. Brand new Henry Holland Animal Fishnets will bring a subtle dash of Bette Lynch to your legs. To take the effect to the next level, try layering on two pairs. Henry Holland Layered Fishnets come in a double pack to allow you to do just this with a very superior thread plain fishnet design.

Anklets, so popular on the Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter catwalks have also been included in the range, with Henry Holland Fishnet Anklets offering a more delicate dose in blousy colours including lavender and denim as well as traditional black.

Those looking for something more risqué can opt for a new take on last year’s big big hitter, the suspender tights. With delicate cut outs around the thigh, and cute mock suspenders, Henry Holland’s Fishnet True Suspender tights are the sexiest thing around.

But, if you really want someone to know what’s on your mind, Henry Holland’s new Fishnet Alphabetights could be just the thing. Embroidered with a riot of letters, get your beau to start with ‘A’ for ankle, working their way up to solve the mysteries of your mind….. It could be the revelation that our menfolk have been waiting for!

The new Henry Holland tights are available now priced from £12.00, with socks at just £7.50.

London Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2012: the Trend Report

The fashion pack descended on London this week to devour a feast of fashion from the UK’s top designers.  London Fashion Week has a reputation for being quirky, eccentric and occasionally downright bonkers – but commentators have dubbed this Autumn Winter 2012 London Fashion Week the one where London grew up and became more commercially aware.  Don’t think for a second that means boring though!  With prints, acid brights, fun and colourful tailoring. London’s designers have once again proved that they are bursting with creativity and leading the way in the fun and wearable fashion we’ll all be coveting next season.   I’ve picked out a few of the emerging trends from this week’s catwalk shows and I’ve also included some ideas for how to wear those looks right now.

Florals are a big trend for this Spring Summer season but designers, including Erdem and Giles, are determined to keep them alive for Autumn Winter.  While summer is a riot of colourful flower prints, autumn winter naturally calls for something a little more demure and muted.  Get the look now with Pamela Mann’s Flocked Rose Tights which have velvety flocked roses on a sheer black background that gives the perfect balance between flowery patterns and wintery texture.  Floral patterns on dark backgrounds also work well for this look so check out the Celeste Stein Frederick Dynasty Tights or Black New Age Floral Tights.

Big knits are a winter godsend and there were plenty of over sized jumpers to choose from on the catwalks at Jonathan Saunders, Acne and Christopher Kane.  Whether they were adorned with bright patterns, sparkling embellishment or made in acid brights, they were worn with a long, bottom covering, line.   Wear them with leggings or footless tights but make sure you always add in a pair of heels (the higher the better) to give the look a more dressed up feel.

Speaking of leggings, just when we thought they were waning they have had yet another revival at London Fashion Week.  At Clements Ribiero and Issa pretty much every dress or skirt was combined with a pair of leggings.  The new way to wear them is under longer length skirts and always with heels.  Think slim fitting knee length and midi skirts.   Try out the Trasparenze Dorella Footless Leggings in every colour and update you whole wardrobe.  Alternatively, take your leggings with a figure boosting secret.  Spanx’s Look At Me Cotton Leggings will hold you in all over to make your legs, bum and tummy look firmer and more toned under those fitted skirts and dresses.

For a sumptuous evening look you can’t beat brocade patterns in glimmering metallic threads.  Oman and Temperley exhibited luxurious brocade on skirts, trousers and jackets.  Get the look now with the Mary Portas and Charnos Baroque Floral Tights which have an opulent brocade floral pattern in a choice of silver, indigo or rich red.  This is a pattern that is best worn sparingly though.  Heed the advice of the Telegraph’s Lisa Armstrong who cautions “however much you adore brocade, limit yourself to one piece at a time. Keep the rest low-key and you can wear this day to night.”

One of the advantages of showcasing new Autumn Winter collections in February is that the weather is still chilly enough to start experimenting with next winter’s looks now!  Stock up on leggings and florals, You might be longing for the lazy, hazy days of summer but necessity still dictates that an oversized jumper and leggings are still going to be useful well into April.  And of course, don’t forget to start working that brocade into your look, especially for sumptuous evening occasions.    What are your favourite looks from London Fashion Week?  Do let us know which of the new looks you will be trying out over the next few months including those all important hosiery choices.

London Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2012: House of Holland

Henry Holland had me worried for a moment when he declared “We’re growing up!” at his Autumn Winter 2012 catwalk show this week.  “Please, not too much!” I thought.

The House of Holland catwalk show at London Fashion Week is always a MyTights.com favourite.  As well as his outstanding ready to wear collections, Holland also shows his range of hosiery which he designs exclusively for Pretty Polly.  Even for us, the catwalk show is the very first glimpse of the House of Holland range that we will be stocking next season.  It never disappoints.

As it turned out there was no need to fret, Henry Holland’s version of “grown up” still has that irreverent streak that made him one of fashion’s biggest success stories.  Sure there was plenty of neat tailoring but combined with outsized prints and youthful cherry reds, candy pinks, cobalt blues and sunny yellows.  Dog tooth print was a common theme at the show and we are already coveting the hounds tooth check tights in electric blue and yellow.  The oversized dog tooth check, with all of its associations with old fashioned glamour, certainly looks the part alongside the Holland’s tailoring but they are given a more youthful feel with a dash of eye catching yellow at the mid thigh.  I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on a pair and styling them with a 60s style shift dress and a pair of chunky platform heels.  I also like the idea of wearing them at work with a midi skirt during the day and then showing off the yellow flash with a shorter skirt in the evening – classic boardroom to bar looks.

More grown up certainly but defiantly not all the way, this is just a taste of the new hosiery range from House of Holland for Pretty Polly.  We’ve seen pictures of the new collection and there are lots more exciting and cutting edge designs to come for Autumn Winter 2012.  We’ll be clamouring to get our hands on the new styles as soon as they are available but for now we’ll all have to be content with lusting over the catwalk images.  Is it wrong to be looking forward to next winter so fervently?

MyTights.com goes to NYC Fashion Week!

Our founder Laura jetted out to NYC last week for New York fashion week and was invited to the utterly incredible Emilio Cavallini AW 12 show.  Inspired by the 1950s model Bettie Page, the first real pin up girl and femme fatal, the show opened with a short film called “Risqué Business at the Florence Excelsior Hotel” which was followed by an absolutely stunning collection.

Called “peculiar and provocative” by the Fashion Herald Blog, the show was almost avant-garde in its presentation.  Fashion blog Hogger & Co. called it “a sensual display of sexy leg and body wear”, while the Fashion Herald Blog got past the peculiarity and loved the stockings that, they say, “really help define your outfit”.

Established 40 years ago, Emilio Cavallini is known as a brand that is synonymous with innovation and cutting edge design.  Cavallini himself says he was “intrigued by the idea of pulling hosiery out of anonymity, of transforming it into a ‘garment’ unto itself…. Let’s face it, the leg makes up more than 30 percent of a head-to-toe look.”

The AW 12 collection gave us a good idea of what to expect when it comes round to autumn again… and the great news is you can start keeping an eye out now because some of the trends will already be around.  Here are three of our favourite looks that we can’t wait to try!

Soft Fetish

For those of you that couldn’t get to grips with the fetish trend the first time around, here’s your chance to try it again.  In the autumn fetish styles will return with a softer, almost ladylike look.  Lace hosiery and floral designs will be blended with intricate fishnet and shredded hosiery – you can keep it tough with leather or team with silks and chiffons to create sexy, elegant looks.

Tattoo

Jessie J has already been spotted in them and styles of tattoo tights are already available, but they’ll be around in a big way come the autumn.  Emilio Cavallini has adapted the trend to make it softer, with lace, net and swirling designs all featuring in classic black – who would have thought that tattoo tights would eve become office appropriate?

Textured Patterns

Chevron tights & argyle designs will be back in the autumn, mixing with heavy-duty optical illusion graphics.  We recommend teaming these with your shift dresses from this season for an ultra-chic work look.

With so many exciting designs, we almost can’t wait for it to be autumn again!  What’s your favourite look?  Do you love the new collection or are you dreading having to wear leather again?  We want to know what you think, so head to our Facebook page or tweet us and let us know!

New York Fashion Week – Trend Report

This New York Fashion Week has not been a great one for trend spotting.  If you were searching for an overarching theme and some rules to live your Autumn Winter by you may be disappointed.  New York’s designers clearly declined collude on the influences of the season and the result is a smorgasbord of looks to choose from.  However, my eagle fashion eye has still spotted a few running themes I think we’ll be seeing more of as we get closer to next winter.

Whether you chose to call it burgundy, merlot, bordeaux or even sangria, deep red wine shades were super popular with designers in New York and featured in coats and silky separates alike.  Alexander Wang’s distinctive burgundy coat with a lacquered finish drew admiring glances while Christan Sirano’s ladylike collection included a silky skirt and blouse combo with lovely gold highlights.  Accessorise this look with matching burgundy tights.  Jonathan Aston’s 40 denier tights in classic burgundy or ruby will be perfect.  Alternatively, choose complementary shades of brown, red or purple.   For evening, take a leaf out of Christian Sirano’s book and accessorise with hints of gold for a luxurious look.  Pamela Mann’s Lurex Highball Gold Tights will add texture under silks as well as a glamorous metallic look.

One of the first fashion rules I learnt was that you should never wear black and navy together.  Time to unlearn that one as black and blue combos were rife at New York Fashion Week.  Preen concentrated on layers of black and varying shades of blue but it was at DKNY that we saw the most blatant disregard for the rules.  A short silk skirt and cosy jumper in navy blue were teamed with thick black tights in just one of many blue/black combinations.  No doubt I’ll have come to terms with this colour combination by September and will be sporting it like a pro.  For now I’m not so sure.

White is a huge trend for this Spring Summer but it looks set to continue into Autumn Winter.  I absolutely fell in love with Derek Lam’s white cable knit jumper over a flowing, floor length chiffon skirt.  Such an elegant look.   Winter white looks best in wool as this will stop you from looking too summery. Choose ribbed tights like Falke’s Soft Merino Wool Ribbed Tights in Wool White or thick over knee socks like Jonathan Aston’s Long Wool Mix Boot Sock in ivory.

New York Fashion Week is generally regarded as the more commercially savvy of the fashion weeks so it is a good indicator of what we will all be wearing next year.  Don’t forget though that London Fashion Week (which has a reputation for being a little more “out there”) follows hot on the perfectly balanced heels of New York.  Next week look out for our take on the trends this side of the pond.

Henry Holland in Vogue!

The February Issue of Vogue may be slightly ahead of us with its Spring/Summer fashion shoots, but recently we’ve noticed bikinis and sunglasses creeping back onto the high street so we’ve decided to embrace it.  In fact, with the snow disrupting our travel and our house being colder than the inside of a fridge, pictures of blue skies and deckchairs are exactly what we need.

And THEN we spotted the Henry Holland Knee Highs nestling in between the couture clothes and high end jewellery!  At just £7.50 a pair, the socks aren’t exactly designer prices but the bold design from Henry Holland has found favour with the fashion elite.

Available in pretty ice cream shades like pale pink and pastel green, they have a summery feel to them and will go perfectly with your Riviera chic this spring.  You could even try layering over nude sheer tights now for a warmer version of the look.  Knee highs can be tricky to wear if you are conscious of your calves looking bulky but the vertical stripe design on these balances them out for super flattering accessorising.

Team them with white basics if your dare or your spring pastel colours, and retro accessories like stack heels, oversized sunglasses and statement necklaces.  You can wear them as normal knee high socks or push them down Vogue style, but beware – these are not the kind of suntan marks you want to get.

It’s not often something this cheap gets the stamp of approval from a fashion giant like Vogue, so snap these up quickly for a burst of sunshine in your winter wardrobe.

Who Wore it Best: Dione Bromfield vs. Jade Thirlwall

Dione Bromfield (singer and goddaughter of Amy Winehouse) and Jade Thirlwall from Little Mix have both been spotted out and about recently in a twist on the classic suspender tights.  Both girls stepped out in tights which were opaque to just above the knee and then gave way to sheer hosiery, with a pretty line of opaque hearts around the top of the opaque leg – perfect with Valentine’s day just around the corner!  You can get the look with the Pamela Mann Large Overknee Heart Tights (pictured), a snip at just £7.99!

Both girls are no stranger to exciting and unique hosiery – Jade stepped out in customised Little Mix Henry Holland tights just before her and the rest of the band won the X Factor, while Dionne has been spotted in suspender tights and polka dots among others.

Jade wore hers to the Tickled Pink Girls’ Night Out gig and teamed them with black shorts, and a zip up jumper over a black shirt with a pink tie – see her look here.  Coincidentally, Dionne also performed at the gig and plumped for the classic suspender tights design.  However, the singer must have recognised Jade’s tights as she had worn them already – to switch on the Christmas lights at the Brunswick at the end of November.

Dionne dressed hers up with a black prom style dress but added an edge with some heavy duty black army boots.  A slick of pillar box red lipstick completed the look that earned her a nod of approval from the fashion elite including Vogue Italia, who named it their “Look of the Day” (see it here).  But Jade isn’t without her fair share of admirers, with designer Henry Holland counted among the bands biggest supporters.

So who do you think wore it best?  Do you like Dionne’s Punk Princess take or is Jade’s urban cool more your thing?  Tell us on Facebook or Twitter!

MyTights.com in Cosmo!

The style gurus at Cosmopolitan Magazine always seem to get it right… so who are we to argue with their rules for a happy wardrobe even when we’re broke and freezing?  You can read the entire article here, but we’ve pulled together the highlights …

1)      There’s no shame in faking it

Cosmo reckons that when push comes to shove, there’s no harm in using shapewear to supplement your gym routine in the quest for a gorgeous figure.  Having felt our own resolve dwindle as January went by and watching every single New Year’s Resolution fly out of the window, we reckon there’ no harm in using shapewear to replace your gym routine.  Flat stomach in 2 minutes?  Yes please.

2)      You CAN work bright colours and still feel chic

If the thought of acid and neon brights coming back into vogue any time soon is enough to make you break out in a nervous rash, it’s time to learn that colour is not a no-no.  Pastels are going to be everywhere this spring and there’s nothing easier than a mint green handbag or pale lilac pair of tights to perk you up for Spring (when it finally arrives, of course).  Browse our range of coloured tights and team with creams and pale greys for a look that is as right on trend as it is classically simple.

3)      It’s “All in the Legs”

Of course Cosmo caters for the braver fashionistas, too, and they think that a pair of statement tights are “an ingenious and affordable way of updating and changing your look”.  They love the Pamela Mann coloured Fishnet Tights (pictured), supplied by MyTights, and the Henry Holland for Pretty Polly range, as worn by Jessie J.

Great style advice from the Cosmo team, and just in time to update your wardrobe before it begins to look horribly bare!
