Henry Holland in Vogue!

The February Issue of Vogue may be slightly ahead of us with its Spring/Summer fashion shoots, but recently we’ve noticed bikinis and sunglasses creeping back onto the high street so we’ve decided to embrace it.  In fact, with the snow disrupting our travel and our house being colder than the inside of a fridge, pictures of blue skies and deckchairs are exactly what we need.

And THEN we spotted the Henry Holland Knee Highs nestling in between the couture clothes and high end jewellery!  At just £7.50 a pair, the socks aren’t exactly designer prices but the bold design from Henry Holland has found favour with the fashion elite.

Available in pretty ice cream shades like pale pink and pastel green, they have a summery feel to them and will go perfectly with your Riviera chic this spring.  You could even try layering over nude sheer tights now for a warmer version of the look.  Knee highs can be tricky to wear if you are conscious of your calves looking bulky but the vertical stripe design on these balances them out for super flattering accessorising.

Team them with white basics if your dare or your spring pastel colours, and retro accessories like stack heels, oversized sunglasses and statement necklaces.  You can wear them as normal knee high socks or push them down Vogue style, but beware – these are not the kind of suntan marks you want to get.

It’s not often something this cheap gets the stamp of approval from a fashion giant like Vogue, so snap these up quickly for a burst of sunshine in your winter wardrobe.

MyTights.com in Cosmo!

The style gurus at Cosmopolitan Magazine always seem to get it right… so who are we to argue with their rules for a happy wardrobe even when we’re broke and freezing?  You can read the entire article here, but we’ve pulled together the highlights …

1)      There’s no shame in faking it

Cosmo reckons that when push comes to shove, there’s no harm in using shapewear to supplement your gym routine in the quest for a gorgeous figure.  Having felt our own resolve dwindle as January went by and watching every single New Year’s Resolution fly out of the window, we reckon there’ no harm in using shapewear to replace your gym routine.  Flat stomach in 2 minutes?  Yes please.

2)      You CAN work bright colours and still feel chic

If the thought of acid and neon brights coming back into vogue any time soon is enough to make you break out in a nervous rash, it’s time to learn that colour is not a no-no.  Pastels are going to be everywhere this spring and there’s nothing easier than a mint green handbag or pale lilac pair of tights to perk you up for Spring (when it finally arrives, of course).  Browse our range of coloured tights and team with creams and pale greys for a look that is as right on trend as it is classically simple.

3)      It’s “All in the Legs”

Of course Cosmo caters for the braver fashionistas, too, and they think that a pair of statement tights are “an ingenious and affordable way of updating and changing your look”.  They love the Pamela Mann coloured Fishnet Tights (pictured), supplied by MyTights, and the Henry Holland for Pretty Polly range, as worn by Jessie J.

Great style advice from the Cosmo team, and just in time to update your wardrobe before it begins to look horribly bare!

How to… wear WOW Tights

Wondering how to wear statement tights without looking silly? Or bored of wearing trousers all the time now the weather has (finally) turned wintery? MyTights.com were featured in a handy how-to guide in the press this week, so we thought we’d share their top 5 ways to work statement tights…

1) Colour blocking
With the 60s revival still going strong, colour blocking is going to be around for a while longer yet, and what easier way than to buy a simple pair of coloured tights? A simple, cheap and cheerful addition to your wardrobe, they start from a teeny tiny £4.10, so you really can afford to match them to everything in your wardrobe!

2) Embellished
Spots are hot at the moment, but try a twist on the trend with the Charnos 75 Brigitte Tights (the actual tights in the feature, supplied by MyTights.com) which feature glittering Swarovski crystals up the back of the leg for a sparkling addition to a glamourous black dress.

3) Texture
Different textures can work really well as long as you don’t go OTT. Try leg lengthening ribbed tights with cotton skirts or silky shirts.

4) Stars
The stars trend last year was begun by designers like Christopher Kane, and planetary movement have dictated they’re set to last well in to 2010. Snap up a pair of the Henry Holland Superstar Tights, available with either classic black or spangly multi-coloured stars.

5) Elaborate Girly
Lace tights and girly designs like bows and floral motifs are the order of the day. Use them to glam up your party frock, or add a sweet edge to a tough biker look.

Gok Wan Recommends Pretty Polly

Our favourite Super Stylist Gok Wan shows you how to get three glam looks from one simple vest dress in this week’s Reveal Magazine. And the self styled “Auntie Gok” told the readers what we’ve always known – if in doubt, plump for statement tights! Styling the dress with a dramatic feather overlay (a length of feather trim stitched onto the neckline of the dress) he added the gorgeously twinkly Pretty Polly Embellished Tights, supplied by MyTights.com, and finished the theatrical black ensemble with black platforms, Hollywood scarlet lips and piled up hair.

Embellished Tights are a really quick and easy way to add a touch of instant glamour to any old dresses – or try them for the office with cocktail shorts and floaty blouses. Gok chose this black version for a striking Black Swan-esque look, but why not try a pair of studded tights for a rock chick take on the look, or a shimmering lurex pair for added sparkle?

Or for a different way to wear statement tights, try a print.  Go for a more subtle black opaque on sheer design for work, but for the weekends and nights out you can afford to be much more daring.  Take a look at the range of Celeste Stein tights, which all feature fun prints on 40 denier opaque hosiery (so you won’t get too cold, either!).  Some of our favourite designs are even in our amazing sale!

Christmas might be beginning to seem so long ago, but don’t let that stop you putting something luxuriously fun into your wardrobe for the new year.

Grazia tells you how to get SJP’s style…

Where Sarah Jessica Parker leads, the rest will follow. So expect everyone to be wearing statement hosiery in the new year, following SJP stepping out in bright aqua tights last week in New York. Even Grazia magazine’s high end loving fashion editors have given the look their stamp of approval, and suggested various (in their words) “snazzy, party-worthy, Christmas-dinner-talking-point tights” to try.

Colour Pop
Grazia recommends working colour pop tights in purple, blue and red – we also advise trying bottle greens, which are much easier to pull off than you’d ever think. Check out the entire selection of coloured tights, or to get SJPs look, try the Jonathan Aston 40D Tights in Hyacinth or Velvet Green.

Prints
Animal print tights seem to be back season after season, so this is a safe bet to keep you looking current for ages, and will go with loads in your wardrobe. Or try cute heart print tights- so on trend this spring. We know most of your budgets won’t stretch to Grazia’s recommended Yves Saint Laurent version, but you can get your hands on a cute style for much cheaper, plus we’ve got lots of different styles so you can choose your favourite (or get them all to last you right through until Valentine’s day!)

Cosy
Fairisle tights and Tartan tights designs are also the perfect way to work fashion tights when it’s simply too cold for patterned sheers. Try the Pretty Polly Fairisle Backseam Tights for a twist on the look, or the Pamela Mann Fairisle Tights for a more classic take on the trend.

The Guardian Style Gurus Test our Favourite Tights!

Tis the season to be jolly… and very, very cold, unless you wrap your legs up in something toasty warm.  But what hosiery to go for to make sure you stay warm and comfy?  Enter the Guardian, who have conducted a tights test to find out which opaques are the best: for looks, comfort and durability.  So what did they think of some of our favourite hosiery?

Mary Portas/Charnos Opaque 40 ( pictured)

“Looks: Very Green.  These drew quite a few glances.  Perfect opacity, though: you could leave your legs unshaven for months and no one would know.

Comfort:  The closest feeling to support tights.  So tight, taking them off felt a little like a liberation.

Durability: Frighteningly good.  No snags.”

MyTights says: We LOVE Mary Portas hosiery.  It always seems to be of the highest quality, and it looks stunning, too.  Don’t worry if green isn’t quite your colour, as these tights come in 8 amazing shades.  As to the comfort, tights should generally feel snug – this will prevent sagging around your ankles.  But make sure you check the size guide for each product to prevent ordering a pair of tights in the wrong size!  We also recommend taking a look at the thicker option: the Mary Portas & Charnos Satin 80 Tights, which are a luxuriously thick 80 denier, and so perfect for wintery days!

Wolford Velvet Deluxe 66

“Looks: Revered among tights: classic matt black, as smart as tights can be.  So special you feel you should wear gloves to put them on.  In confidence terms, the closest hosiery gets to carrying a Chanel bag.

Comfort: Exceedingly Comfortable

Durability:  These were barely on when something sharp hidden in the stair carpet tugged at the underside of my foot and, horror, even before 8am, they were flawed.  The ladder didn’t travel far, though, and they held their own for the rest of the day.  Forgiven.”

MyTights says: High praise indeed, and not undeserved for a pair of tights that, although made by a top class brand, aren’t that expensive on a cost per wear basis (providing you don’t keep sharp things hidden in your carpets, we suppose).  Available in brown, navy and charcoal shades as well as classic black, so there’s a pair for every outfit.

Falke Ribbed Tights

“Looks: A nice woolly, subtly patterned rib: not outlandish, but a change from plain black.

Comfort:  I didn’t think about them all day: a good sign.

Durability: A less good sign: they snagged on the zip of my boots, making a hole.  Slightly stiff after a wash and, disappointingly, for all Falke’s reputation, emerged from the drum a bit bobbly.”

MyTights says: For Falke quality and wintery indulgence, we like the Falke Soft Merino Wool Ribbed Tights.  To prevent wearing out during washing, wash by hand or on a cool wash in the washing machine in a hosiery bag.

The UK: Fashion Ambassador of the World (probably)

Let’s face it, with such stiff competition from the hot-shot New York designers and the classic European design houses, when Britain produces a designer as talented as Henry Holland, we want to shout about it.  And finally the US is starting to take notice, with several celebs spotted in Henry Holland tights and the US press going crazy for his quirky designs.

Seventeen magazine cited the magical outfit-enhancing properties of both the Henry Holland Superstar Tights and the Alphabet Tights (seen recently on Kourtney Kardashian!).  Not only are these eye-catching styles perfect for adding a fun twist to everything you already have in your wardrobe (meaning they are also budget friendly fashion, fyi), they also both come in twinkling versions – the Alphabets in silver and the Superstar in multi-coloured glitter, which are perfect for the festive season.

Star magazine, meanwhile, noted the dramatic entrance of our old favourite, suspender tights, and featured a “who wore it best” segment after Rihanna, Kimberly Wyatt and Jessie J were all pictured wearing the Super Suspender Tights.   They declared Rihanna as the star who rocked them the best, but we love Kimberley’s sequin and short tux combo – very, VERY chic.

And the New York Post used the Henry Holland Crochet Tights as part of a clashing prints fashion shoot.  The Crochet Tights, featuring a super-cute patchwork multi-coloured design, work for both day and night.  They sold out for a while but are now back in stock – so grab them while you still can!

In the fickle world of fashion, one thing is for certain: designer Henry Holland has arrived – and is here to stay.

Shapewear: as normal as wearing a bra?

If my conversations with our customers are anything to go by, more and more of you are wearing your shapewear, not just as special occasion wear but for every day figure enhancing.  Certainly I’m known for breaking out the Spanx to give a little bit of a confidence boost under anything that tends to cling around the waist or tummy.  For me it is as normal as choosing a bra to suit the neckline of my dress.  Last week the Sun picked up on the fact that shapewear is now part of our every day wardrobes with a compare and contrast of the market leaders and, even if we do say so ourselves, MyTights.com’s favourite brands have come off pretty well.

Their size 16 model rated the Spanx Slim Cognito Shape Suit as the best all-in-one against shape suits from Matalan and Maidenform.   We agree with Hayley, the Spanx shapesuit can be a tricky one to get on (but that is sort of a necessary evil if it is going to do its job well) but once in place it is really comfy.  I’ve always appreciated the fact that this suit is seam free too as it means there are no seam marks left on the body when you take it off.  Could be a consideration at the end of a romantic evening!

Hayley also rated the Spanx Slimplicity High Waist Panty as the best waist and tummy shaper.  We think this is the closest you can get to wearing a waspie style corset while keeping the freedom of movement you get from shapewear.  For the best shaping slip, the Sun rated the Trinny and Susannah All In One Body Smoother.  The model seemed especially keen on the fact that there was room to accommodate and lift the bum in this shaper while giving a “really controlled, pulled in shape”.
We are not bragging (maybe just a little bit) but MyTights.com products seem to have come top in all the categories they were tested in and Hayley commented more than once on how comfortable these products are to wear.  I’m a huge Spanx fan and, ranging from extra strong to medium control, I have yet to find a product of theirs that I don’t find comfortable enough to wear all day.  New products like the Spanx Undie-tectable range show that Spanx is now making everyday shapewear which is ultra comfortable even if you are a shapewear newby.  There is clearly a demand and not just from the shapewear diehards like me.  How do you wear yours?  Could 2012 could be the year that shapewear truly becomes as normal as wearing a bra?

Get the Look: Fearne Cotton

Fearne Cotton is consistently spotted in the best hosiery around, so it’s really no surprise that More! Magazine named her tights-centred style as their “Look of the Week”. Helping you to recreate the look, they suggested the Baroque Floral tights in Rich Red, supplied by MyTights.com.

Created by the collaboration between our favourite retail guru Mary Portas and hosiery giant Charnos, they feature metallic yarns woven into a gorgeously intricate floral design in a deep wine shade. We were thinking about wearing these tights with luxury fabrics like chiffons and silks, but the ever stylish Fearne has shown us exactly how to dress them down for daytime grunge-luxe.

The leather jacket, striped dress and brogues are all thing you’ve probably already got in your wardrobe from last season (or if not, More tells you exactly where to find them!) If wearing sunglasses in the middle of winter, in the evening, indoors is something you’re not QUITE sure you can pull off, go for some geek-chic thick rimmed black glasses instead (with plain glass inside if you don’t actually wear glasses, obviously).

The one thing we’d change? The bag. Fab as it may be, we think our new season tan satchels would complement this look perfectly. For more statement tights, check out the rest of the Mary Portas range or take a look at the collection of lace tights.
