Embrace Your Opaques: Why Bare Legs in Winter Are a No

Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights

Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights

After months of cutting back on the carbs and ensuring our pins are hair-free and beautifully moisturised, winter is finally here. At last – time to lean back, reach for the biscuit tin and embrace our opaque tights, right? Well, if the recent legwear choices of high-profile celebrities are anything to go by, wrong. It would seem that winter warming opaques and wool tights are out, in favour of natural bare legs, with The Daily Mail reporting that the likes of Victoria Beckham and Suki Waterhouse at the forefront of this, quite frankly, ludicrous trend. The MyTights team have been shaking their heads in disbelief ever since hearing rumours of this fad. Sure, bare legs are fine for A-list celebrities with a chauffeur on standby and the money to spend on daily trips to the beauty salon. But what about us normal folk who crave warm legs on our commute to the office? And why wouldn’t we want to take advantage of the wonderfully chic winter legwear on offer? To convince you all that wrapping up warm is the way to go, we’ve compiled a list of the most stylish thick and winter tights around!

  1. Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights – at their best teamed with denim shorts and a cable knit jumper, these stylish matte tights are available in a range of hot colours and have a 55% wool composition, for the toastiest pins around. So on-trend that Cara Delevigne was recently seen on the front cover of Harper’s Bazaar in a similar pair! Well, if I must…
  2. Oroblu Miracle Tights – cute plaid print meets winter warmer with these 80 denier fashion tights from Oroblu. Ideal for jumping on board to the heritage trend, opt for these if you’re looking for cosy and stand out hosiery to take you from day to play.
  3. Wolford Zip Tights adding new dimensions to the meaning of fashion statement, these Wolford tights are a revamp of the classic Wolford De Luxe 66, given a maximum impact makeover thanks to a stunning zip embellishment that runs from the ankle to mid thigh!

Snug As A Bug: How To Wear Wool Tights

Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights

Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights

Like her or loathe her, there’s no denying that supermodel Cara Delevingne has a huge influence on the fashion world. Rarely a day goes by when the supermodel isn’t making the headlines, and with media interest like that, it’s no surprise that brands and publications alike are fighting over the current fashion darling. Last month saw Cara gracing the cover page of W Magazine looking typically stunning, wearing a black velvet dress and chic white wool tights. We love wool hosiery here at MyTights, and it may only be October, but her legwear made us feel (and we say this begrudgingly) kind of Christmassy.

No longer considered outdated or frumpy, wool tights are a fashion forward and practical option, and if Cara’s wearing them, you don’t need us to tell you that they’re everywhere this autumn/winter! With colder temperatures set to hit in the coming weeks, wool tights will keep your pins fashionably snug, and often blended with cashmere, merino wool and angora, luxuriously soft to boot. Here are some top tips to get it right:

  • Wool tights come in a plain knit or with a ribbed texture – opt for a plain knit if the rest of your outfit is quite busy, but if your outfit is fairly plain, a ribbed finish is great for adding texture and interest to your look!
  • For an effortless daytime look that will work time and time again, team with a pair of simple denim shorts and a knitted jumper.
  • Or if you love the warmth of wool but need inspiration on how to dress them up, team with a loose fitting tunic, thin waist belt, heeled ankle boots and lashings of jewellery!

If you’re after a pair of practical wool tights to wear to the office, we recommend the Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights, which are available in a variety of autumnal colours. Perfect for keeping your legs cosy on the early morning commute, they’re also made from 55% wool, so comfort is top of the bill here. For something textured to add some interest to a plain outfit, the Levante Wool Rib Tights are just the ticket, and they come with the added benefit of being incredibly affordable. Luxury seekers will also love the Wolford Merino Tights, typically Wolford with their generous waistband for maximum comfort.

If nothing here is taking your fancy, why not have a look at our entire range of wool tights, instead?

Whatever you choose, you’ll be fit for a winter wonderland!

FASHION WEEK: Tights Highlights from SS15

The month of endless Fashion Week(s) have come and gone. From New York to Paris,  designers from all over showcased their newest designs for Spring/Summer 2015. While we have just gotten into autumn, it is NEVER too early to start thinking about the upcoming trends for this spring. We here at MyTights have all the upcoming tights trends here for you so you can start stocking up early.

New York

Footless Black Tights seemed to be a popular accessory at the Polo Ralph Lauren Show. While these specific tights are paired with pretty white lace dresses and black accessories, these tights can be styled in virtually any way- from dressed up to dressed down.

London

The Fashion World exploded when Tom Ford gave us lots of legs styled with Black Hold Ups all over his runway in London. Styled with LBD’s, black hold ups are yet another versatile accessory that can easily be brought from day to night with a simple change in hemline.

Still not sure about socks with heels? David Longshaw showed us in London that this trend will be very alive this upcoming spring by pairing pretty socks with heels on all of his models. This trend is perfect for early spring/late fall when you want to still wear your strappy sandals without having your toes get too cold. Protection and style, what more could you ask for!?

Milan

Giamba donned all her models in white spotty tights on her runway in Milan. While we do not have white spots in stock (they have been dully noted though), black will work just as well with this trend. Take Giamba’s advice and do not be afraid to mix the spots with more spots or floral patterns.

Dolce and Gabbana shared lots of hosiery trends on their runway. My personal favorite was floraly, lacy knee high socks. These socks can be very versatile and compliments almost any outfit. Pair with strappy sandals to wear when the weather isn’t quite warm enough.

Paris

Jean Paul Gaultier said au revoir to his ‘ready to wear’ career by pulling off the most outrageously fun fashion show of Paris Fashion Week- I was extremely jealous of this ‘beauty pageant’. Many of his models were clothed in coloured tights. Pair with anything from denim shorts to a LBD as these tights are very versatile.

Last, but definitely not least: Louis Vuitton also stepped onto the tights bandwagon this year by dressing his models in lace tights. Do not be afraid to pair these tights with a pattered dress like Louis Vuitton did, it looks wonderfully fun!

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PAIR OF BLACK TIGHTS

A pair of black tights… Sounds pretty simple, right?

WRONG…

Black tights have always been apparent in the fashion world, bringing versatility to those colder winter nights out as well as work wear, and the bonus is they go with any type of footwear.  The only problem is, there are so many to choose from – with SO many styles to choose from we can understand why you would get confused; but don‘t worry we’ve simplified the options for you to find a pair that suit you (and the weather)!

Sheer

With the choice of ‘barely black’ from the colour options, these sheers are a light (10) denier and are a customer favourite with an ultra glossy finish and flattering fit!

Semi-opaque

These flattering semi-opaques live up to the Wolford name, and are ideal for work with comfort and durability as a main aspect.

Opaque

These Wolford Velvet de Luxe 66 denier tights have a gorgeous smooth matte finish, and they are made from a velvety yarn for a soft and luxurious feel. These luxury tights are perfect for winter!

Support

These support tights are perfect for aching pins and sore ankles! Invista tried and tested, the Firm Energising Support Tights have a Factor 6 support for your thighs, a Factor 9 for your calves and a strong Factor 12 for around the ankles.

Fit shaping

Don’t quite have the time to hit the gym? These fit shaping tights not only flatten tummies and firm up hips, thighs and bums but their unique resistance band technology will help you burn extra calories too.

Cotton

Uninterrupted by a brief, the fabric remains the same thickness through for a gorgeous, even colour. Without any visible reinforcement, you have complete peace of mind that those flirty hemlines won’t expose anything.

Seam free

Perfect for wearing under close fitting or clingy dresses, these seamless tights ensure that there are no seams to show through your clothing.

Wool/thick

Made with a harmonious mix of merino wool and cotton, these will keep your warm no matter what the weather side is up to.

Cashmere

These thick cotton tights will keep you warm in the winter months, and the addition of cashmere and silk yarns, means they will feel gorgeous on your skin too!

INTERVIEW WEAR- WHY TIGHTS ARE A MUST!

There’s nothing worse than turning up for an interview and you’ve missed the attire ‘memo’. You may as well have turned up naked, and that reoccurring dream that haunted you since you were a child has just materialized. But of course, help is at hand here at MyTights.com! Here’s some guidance on how to ace that interview, and as we are judged within the first 7 seconds of meeting someone, the appearance is a pretty good place to start…

94% of interviewers have a negative impression on a candidate if they show up bare-legged*

Unfortunately we aren’t all blessed with naturally slender or blemish free legs, (or hot weather all year round!), and so this may not apply to many-  if Miranda Kerr and Beyoncé still invest in sheers then there’s no reason why we shouldn’t!

The ‘debate’…

Years ago the debate on whether women should or shouldn’t wear tights to the workplace was unheard of, and pantyhose were a woman’s best friend. Many women still live by this, and this is something candidates need to consider! Your potential employers are probably not your age so wearing tights is a must for them, and as a potential newbie you don’t want to give any of the senior team a reason to dislike you! After you’ve been hired, you can then get a feel for the company to then decided whether going bare-legged can be accepted.

Company culture

You may be asked to dress in business casual and if so then fretting whether you should or shouldn’t wear tights won’t be an issue. BUT don’t assume that all businesses dress this way; make sure to ask and get a full brief policy description.

“For women, the more skin you show, the less influence you have.”

So, now we’ve discovered that tights are a BIG deal in an interview (who knew?!) now all you have to do is CHOOSE a pair…

Colours are limited, as although coloured and patterned tights are ‘in’, wearing the newest AW14 trend to an interview for a financial position in a bank may not be appreciated; so for ultimate safety stick to Nude or Black tights.

Opaques

These 50 denier suede matt opaque tights are an essential to the winter wardrobe this season, super soft and smooth against your legs they can be worn with any fabric skirt and perfect for an interview!

levante-suede-matt

Nude sheers-

These sheers have been around since 1937 (with a few tweaks to keep them up to date with hosiery innovation, of course), so we are pretty certain that they are a good catch. These 10 denier tights are cherished for their ultra-glossy finish, and with high durability and wear you can’t go wrong!

Black

With a broad selection of dark colours to choose from, these glossy Wolfords will have any interviewer wishing they’ve got a pair!

FISHNETS: DOS AND DON’TS

Tom Ford brought sexy back JT style this season with fishnet tights, so we thought we would share some of our wisdom with you so there are no excuses for any Avril circa 2002 fishnet faux pas…You’re welcome.

DO…

> Trust the designers- they know what they’re talking about. Tom Ford wasn’t the main man behind the Gucci turnaround in the late ‘90s for no reason; he knows how to style a woman. Have faith!

fishnet

> Have confidence in yourself, not just the designer. The most awkward thing to see is someone feeling uncomfortable. If you don’t feel yourself- don’t wear them!

> Less is more, remember? Why not wear fishnets underneath your trouser suit at the office with a pair of heels if you want to feel more confident but aren’t quite willing to show the whole leg.

> Try a pencil skirt with some leather boots, so your knee is the only bit of fishnet flesh on show.

> Dress yourself down in other areas:

>>For work & daytime: light lipstick, minimal make up, a pencil skirt and a blouse

>>For evenings- minimal make up – just because it’s dark doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to slap on the red lippy(!) – a tight midi skirt with a pair of boots and a light cropped jacket, or a plain coloured jersey dress.

> Wear sheer bare look tights underneath the fishnets if you want to keep warm this season. Try Falke Shelina Tights for this look, with several options to match your skin tone!

DON’T…

honeycomb-tights-main_1_2

> Deliberate in buying fishnets with holes in them. Unless you’re going to a fancy dress party. Even then I wouldn’t advise it.

> Wear stilettos or sky high heels- instead try a casual boot or a wedged boot.

> Do a Rihanna/Miley Cyrus and wear fishnet and NOTHING else. You won’t pull it off and you may be arrested.

> Overestimate your coolness, bright tights underneath green fishnets don’t work for everyone, so don’t assume you’re suddenly Taylor Momsen because you’ve purchased a pair of quirky tights. Black or nude is the safest choice of colour.

> Feel like you have to convert overnight- there are plenty of options if you want to be subtle but part of the fishnet craze this autumn.Try the Charnos Honey comb fishnets- with a matte finish; these tights hold a subtle honeycomb design that decorates legs whilst giving you a comfortable and warm feel- perfect all year round!

> Think that wearing a low cut top; a mini skirt and fishnets is in fashion, it’s not. Keep it classy.

Why not try…

Levante fishnet tights

These pair of classic fishnets by Levante are a seasonal must-have, available in different shades and with no gusset; they are perfect to wear day and night and for any occasion.

Pamela Mann Fishnet seamed tights

These Pamela Mann Fishnets are perfect for elongating those pins whilst giving off a flirty but flattering look. Perfect for going out or evening wear.

Straight from the catwalk…

One of our favourite designers Tom Ford shows us how it’s done with a coordinated office suit and a pair of simple black boots.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend…

We love patterned tights! There, we said it. Patterns make it really easy to add depth to your outfit with their intricate patterns and designs.  We’ve selected a few of our favourites at the moment and here is how we wear them…

Diamond print is bold and classic, and the Charnos Diamond Stripe Tights pattern is quite visible.  For this reason, it is important to maintain uniformity with your clothing so as to not overwhelm the outfit. A single colour skirt or shorts will add the coverage you need without distracting from the diamond pattern.  Keep your shoes simple to maintain the focus on your legs.

These Pretty Polly Chevron Cable Tights add more coverage so we like to save them for foggy and rainy days.  Pair them with a white lacy dress or an eyelet skirt to keep some summer flair in your outfit.  If you want to add colour to your outfit, a colourful, lightweight scarf or bright jewellery will do the trick without confusing the ensemble.

While the Charnos Diamond Net Tights are not artwork tights, they have a  fine design that reminds me of an artist’s careful hand.  However, this pattern is what makes it so versatile for the winter and summer months.  Try pairing a pastel coloured dress with them and simple flats for a spring outfit on a cooler day.  For a bolder look, a bright coral t-shirt dress would be perfect for a summer night out.

However you choose to wear your diamond and chevron patterned leg-wear, be sure to leave a comment telling us how you did!

Paisley print problems… Sorted!

There is nothing I enjoy more than finding a new, wacky print to add to my ever-growing collection but I often find myself struggling on how to style them. Luckily for you, after much trial and improvement on how to work this look flawlessly I am now here to spread the news. You too will be able to achieve a day to night wardrobe sensation (you’re welcome).

At the moment I am particularly taken with the Pamela Mann Paisley Net Tights because with the correct outfit they can be worn in the office or out on the town. What more could you want?!

Although these tights are black don’t be fooled into thinking that black can only be worn in the evenings. Get your office look in line by teaming these with a pastel skater skirt (we are loving turquoise/blue/teal this season) and a black button down blouse. Splashes of colour keep the tights day time appropriate but also classy enough to wear to your next meeting. Keep your footwear simple with some black pumps that don’t distract from the pattern, see our Polyvore account for more great ideas!!

To take these tights into the night it is important that you keep the rest of your outfit pattern and print free to avoid clashing or overdoing it. Less is definitely more on this occasion! We decided that these paisley lace tights look absolutely gorgeous teamed with a black panelled skater dress and black heels to accentuate those gorgeous legs. The flowing hemlines of a skater dress will ensure there is enough femininity to this jet black montage. We recommend keeping your makeup fairly natural as the paisley print is enough of a statement and the all black outfit should be kept clean and simple.

Last but certainly not least is how to style these for a casual day time look, somewhere between office appropriate and evening wear. I think these paisley tights look really stylish with a gray skater skirt and a crop top with a simple coloured jacket. This look is casual and due to the colours all being simple/pastels/ nothing too outrageous or bright, it still has the spotlight on the paisley tights.

I hope this has helped you take one pair of tights to new heights and lots of different looks! Comment below on how you would wear these paisley print tights.
