With the weather already into the seemingly irreversible decline of autumn once more, it’s time to pack away our flip flops, relinquish the sunnies and wave goodbye to bare legs. Which made us sad – for about a minute, until we remembered that this means we can dig out last year’s cape, dust off the hosiery drawer and treat ourselves to a new pair of boots, safe in the knowledge we can dress up such purchases as a necessity rather than a frivolous indulgence. Yippee!
Not only does the re-emergence of tights as our wardrobe staple mean we can stop faffing with fake tan and maintaining a meticulous round-the-clock hair removal regime, they permit us to continue rocking our summer dresses for weeks to come without fear of overexposure, PLUS they’re the best team mate for our pending new boots.
The ladies at Dune are with us, it seems, as their latest video pairs their essential AW13 boots collection with MyTights hosiery – so whatever your style, there’s a boot-and-tights combo designed for you…
We love the way Dune has styled their quilted biker boot with thick grey ribbed tights – it’s the perfect mix of textures for a season that’s turning out to be all about taking the rough with the smooth. They’ve also paired classic chunky biker boots with thick wool tights – the most effective weather proof look and ideal for long journeys. Just make sure you wear something that shows off a little of your figure on top so the overall look isn’t too heavy.
Steer clear of anything too clumpy for the office – it’s just not going to work with pencil skirts and tailored blouses. Adopt a more elegant silhouette with spiky heels and classic tailoring, or else those with a hankering for something quirkier should head towards masculine heeled styles (think heeled loafers and lace up Mary Poppins booties), which work really well with shorter shift dresses. A plain opaque style will work best with these, but go a bit finer in denier for a sleeker look. 80 denier is probably about perfect for shorter skirts – we love the Andrea Bucci opaques which also come in an array of autumnal hues – or finer 50 denier styles like the Levante Suede Matte Tights are perfect for lower hemlines (pencil skirts and midi dresses).
Perfect for weekend frolics, chunky heeled boots will look chic but equally won’t be averse to clomping around galleries and Sunday markets when the weather isn’t at its friendliest. Lend Chelsea boots a touch of farmer chic with wax jackets and tonal coloured tights in brown and khaki for daytime, or for evening make a statement with a splash of animal print, balancing it out with black opaque tights and a sharp playsuit & blazer combo.
For cut out style so hot it hurts, try bare leg look tights. Anything opaque is waste of a good cut out design, but going totally bare is a no-no when the temperature drops (trust us, goosebumps are not haute couture). The Falke Shelina Tights are the best on the market, and will stop your legs from freezing in complete secret – no one will ever be able to tell you’re wearing tights, they’ll be busy wondering how you got such flawless skin!
Peep toe booties are set to continue into the new season, but how to show off that pedicure without freezing your tootsies off? Toeless tights are a really subtle way to fake that bare leg look – go one shade darker and you can even pretend you’re just back from sunning yourself on the Rivieria!
