This New York Fashion Week has not been a great one for trend spotting. If you were searching for an overarching theme and some rules to live your Autumn Winter by you may be disappointed. New York’s designers clearly declined collude on the influences of the season and the result is a smorgasbord of looks to choose from. However, my eagle fashion eye has still spotted a few running themes I think we’ll be seeing more of as we get closer to next winter.
Whether you chose to call it burgundy, merlot, bordeaux or even sangria, deep red wine shades were super popular with designers in New York and featured in coats and silky separates alike. Alexander Wang’s distinctive burgundy coat with a lacquered finish drew admiring glances while Christan Sirano’s ladylike collection included a silky skirt and blouse combo with lovely gold highlights. Accessorise this look with matching burgundy tights. Jonathan Aston’s 40 denier tights in classic burgundy or ruby will be perfect. Alternatively, choose complementary shades of brown, red or purple. For evening, take a leaf out of Christian Sirano’s book and accessorise with hints of gold for a luxurious look. Pamela Mann’s Lurex Highball Gold Tights will add texture under silks as well as a glamorous metallic look.
One of the first fashion rules I learnt was that you should never wear black and navy together. Time to unlearn that one as black and blue combos were rife at New York Fashion Week. Preen concentrated on layers of black and varying shades of blue but it was at DKNY that we saw the most blatant disregard for the rules. A short silk skirt and cosy jumper in navy blue were teamed with thick black tights in just one of many blue/black combinations. No doubt I’ll have come to terms with this colour combination by September and will be sporting it like a pro. For now I’m not so sure.
White is a huge trend for this Spring Summer but it looks set to continue into Autumn Winter. I absolutely fell in love with Derek Lam’s white cable knit jumper over a flowing, floor length chiffon skirt. Such an elegant look. Winter white looks best in wool as this will stop you from looking too summery. Choose ribbed tights like Falke’s Soft Merino Wool Ribbed Tights in Wool White or thick over knee socks like Jonathan Aston’s Long Wool Mix Boot Sock in ivory.
New York Fashion Week is generally regarded as the more commercially savvy of the fashion weeks so it is a good indicator of what we will all be wearing next year. Don’t forget though that London Fashion Week (which has a reputation for being a little more “out there”) follows hot on the perfectly balanced heels of New York. Next week look out for our take on the trends this side of the pond.
