Transition Fashion

The daffodils are finally out and it really starting to feel like spring.  However, we are now in tricky wardrobe territory.  It’s warming up but there is still a noticeable nip in the air.  Do you dress for the sun or for the chill?  You want to wear sandals but can you risk the possibility of getting caught in an unexpected April shower?    You feel like shedding your bulky tights but the weather is not yet kind enough to allow bare legs.  Well we can’t pretend to solve all your wardrobe dilemmas but this one we can help with.

Over the knee socks are perfect for the transition from winter, through spring and into summer.  They’ll keep you warm when the sun goes in but still allow you stay cool when you hit a spring or summer sun trap.  Perfect for the job are the Trasparenze Dora Wool Rib Over the Knee Socks.  Although they are wool, they are knitted from a fine yarn which means they don’t add bulk.  They look lovely with pretty spring and summer dresses – team with pumps for the day and heels for the evening.  If you want a sleeker look you could try Wolford’s Velvet Over Knees, these are made from 50 Denier hosiery fabric which will show just a hint of leg underneath- keeping it light and summery but without compromising on warmth. Both these products are nice and stretchy so you can wear them high up the leg or just over the knee depending on your look.

If you want to be right on trend then we’d high recommend the Pamela Mann Argyle Over Knee Socks.   If you have been living in comfy brogues all winter these are a great way to keep them going through spring.  Worn with a high buttoned blouse, they will complement the prim and ladylike looks that are all around this spring.

Speaking of brogues, when the weather gets even warmer, they look great with ankle socks.  Choose pretty, feminine styles like the Jonathan Aston Feathered Rumi Anklet or the Jonathan Aston Sweet Roses Anklet to offset the mannishness of brogues.  You could also try the Pamela Mann Sheer Hearts Socks which are brand new this week to MyTights.com – the frill around the ankle and dainty heart pattern is a lovely feminine touch especially in the soft pink colour.

The Sheer Hearts Socks have already been spotted on Fearne Cotton who teamed hers with chunky heels and trousers.  I’ve always loved the look of ankle socks with heels and, wearing them with cropped trousers like Fearne looks sophisticated avoids looking school girly.

Everyone has experienced the pain (and the blisters) from the first day of wearing sandals each year!  Ease your poor feet into those sandals and strappy shoes by protecting them with socks.   Now I know what you are thinking, socks with sandals might be the most serious fashion faux pas a man can commit but we girls have more options at our disposal.  The Jonathan Aston Dropstich Toeless Socks for example look sensational with sandals – you’ll still be able to show off your pedicure but your heels and ankles will be protected from any nasty rubs from new sandals.

Leggings are a great spring wardrobe staple and they have been flying of our shelves since the sun started making regular appearances.   With heels, with flats they work with just about everything and they are super comfortable.  If you want something  a little more exciting than standard black leggings check out the Miss Oroblu Shocking Leggings which are the perfect accompaniment to your summer brights.

We’ll also be championing the Skegging for spring.  It’s a much nicer than it sounds.  Put simply, it’s a skirt and a legging in one!  Jonathan Aston do them in a range of different styles (we particularly like the Jonathan Aston Animal Print Skegging) and because they are knitted in one piece there will be no ugly seams, lines or bulges from wearing your skirt over your leggings.  They are really great value for money as they are so versatile.  Comfy enough to wear to the gym but slip on a pair of heels and they look glamorous enough to wear on a night out.

Spring wardrobes are a challenge, especially when you are itching for the novelty of summer clothing.  I hope we’ve given you a few ideas for staying just warm enough for spring but without compromising on style.   Now is the time to experiment with Skeggings or over the knee socks, who knows you might just find yourself a new wardrobe favourite.

Get the celebrity look…

Some clever celebs have been wearing fantastic hosiery recently! So we’ve trawled through all the celeb hosiery lovers, decided who is wearing them best and then come up with some alternatives for you to replicate their style! So read on to find out what is hot…

First off is serial hosiery wearer: Fearne Cotton. Fearne loves a bit of animal print and she rocked a leopard print dress with a pair of black stripy patterned tights and flat ankle boots. In another outfit that showed her kooky style she wore bright red opaque tights that packed a punch against her simple black outfit and red ruby lips. Jonathan Aston and Pamela Mann have similar pairs.

Rihanna was photographed whilst filming her music video in a multi-print ensemble that hits ‘The Dressing-Up Box’ trend perfectly. She wore fishnet shorts underneath colourful hotpants and these Jonathan Aston fishnet shorts will help you recreate the look. Rihanna also rocked a pair of Henry Holland Bandana Tights on her latest tour!

Pixie Lott who famously wore the Henry Holland Chain Suspenders at V-festival also loves her over-the-knee socks, and has been spotted wearing them with a number of outfits! In a 1960s style short, long sleeved navy shift dress, she relied on her socks to keep her warm (pictured).  Trasparenze have lots of colours to choose from.

Serena, Serena, Serena!! If you are obsessed with Gossip Girl you will know where that line comes from. Both “Serena” and actress Blake Lively have received accolades for their amazing and enviable wardrobe. Pictures taken from the set show Blake wearing tights and she is rocking these black ribbed tights. Try Falke Soft Merino wool ribbed tights to recreate the look.

Another actress who has earnt her fashion stripes with her fashionable boho chic and designer credentials is Sienna Miller. Sienna wore a 1970s Chloé inspired outfit that showed she loves the camel and fur trend! Sienna chose elegant black opaque tights, finishing her outfit beautifully. Try Pretty Polly’s 100 Denier nylon tights or Pamela Mann 80 denier tights.

Lastly, Kelly Osbourne, who was pictured wearing Henry Holland’s Bandana OTK Tights at Glastonbury, chose a more elegant look when performing with The Pussy Cat Dolls. She wore an ultra sexy outfit paired with fishnet spotted tights - Gerbe’s Plumetis Polka Dot Tights (that were featured in Vogue!) are a great alternative.

Sock It to Me

fearnecotton_kneehighsUnfortunately, ‘that time’ is fast approaching. The time for lazing in the summer sun is hurtling into the past at an alarming speed. The streets will be strewn with crispy, golden leafs and winter boots before you’ve had time to heal your sandal sores. But fear not, keeping your tootsies warm has never been more fun. Like it, or loath it – socks are back.

Over-the-Knee, Me?

Celebrities such as Agnes Deyn and Sarah Jessica-Parker are already flying the flag for this classic cheeky-schoolgirl-in-a-Japanese-horror-film look. Pamela Mann’s over knee in white looks great against tanned pins, and when coupled with some desert boots ala Fearne Cotton, is a perfect look for a not-so-sunny afternoon. Alternatively, for those who don’t feel quite so comfortable exposing some thigh, try a variation of the look – add some edge to an OSBMS (Obscenely Short Black Mini-Skirt) by layering patterned tights under a pair of womens’ socks like Jonathan Aston’s Long Wool Mix boot sock for a grunge look that Pixie Geldoff would be proud of.

Ankle-Sock Shock

As controversial as the ankle sock may be, this ‘uncool’ look has definitely made it into the 2010 list of must-dos. Designers such as Miucci Prada, and John Galliano featured many an ankle-sock in their spring/summer runway shows, and it is set to stick around with the likes of Miu Miu and Mark Jacobs continuing the trend through to autumn/winter. Trasparenze’s 15 denier Monique ankle-sock are a pocket friendly way to add punch to any outfit, and they come in fourteen colours. Kelly Osbourne, Alexa Chung and Rihanna have all been seen proudly sporting this angelic look. So, clogs and ankle-socks are officially high-fashion, now there’s a sentence that nobody thought would ever be written. But what if you just don’t ‘dig’ the 1950’s Sock Hop look? For a more of a sexy look, Jonathan Aston’s beautiful Sweet Roses anklet teamed with some sleek pony skin ankle boots is a sure fire way to scream LOOK AT ME this autumn .

fearnecotton_goldtightsIt was as almost as if the designers had predicted our slow start to summer, because all over the catwalks there were attention-grabbing, glistening golds bright enough to replace the sun on an over-cast day in May. Both bold and beautiful, this trend is a sure fine way to get men sweaty under the collar without the hot weather!

At MyTights HQ’s we have a sneaky suspicion that this revival of Eighties lamé and head-turning metallic hues will be very popular among the fashion elite. One of our favorite collections from S/S was Louise Goldin who brought to us innovative sheer tulle inserts in a gold cyber-bodysuit along with metallic lurex leggings. Similar designs are available here at Mytights! To turn Goldin’s runway into a reality choose Pamela Mann Highball Footless tights and if you really have your finger on the fashion pulse, you’ll layer up with ankle socks over the top!

But if you’re after more of a glare-free option that won’t blind co –workers opt for Emilio Cavallin’s Metallic Pie De Poule with Black Tights. The combination of metallic and grubby gold hues achieve a sought after antique look and more of a day time friendly vibe. And they wouldn’t look out of place in Balmain’s collection where the garments looked as though they had been buried for several years and unearthed moments before the spring show!

Guess what, we’ve spotted our favourite radio DJ indulging in this trend, the slave to fashion: Fearne Cotton. She was arriving at LFW ahead of the PPQ show wearing a Vivienne Westwood dress, Gold tights, a pair of Gina shoes and a Mulberry bag. We especially love her look, because she took her outfit to new dizzy heights of fashion with the layering of cute ankle socks over her tights. Someone has been studying the catwalk! When asked about her look Fearne said: “I love socks and I just think that socks for me next year will be quite big. Socks always, I love Socks” (Metro.co.uk).

Jungle prints never really go out of style, but they certainly do get an update every season. Spring/Summer 2010 is no exception – your basic cats like Leopard and Zebra definitively remain trendy, but it has been taken to a whole new level of tribal chic. This is a trend that can penetrate into every aspect of your wardrobe whether it is office attire, casual weekends with family, romantic dinners or a fun fuelled night out with the girls.

Thanks to Roberto Cavallini’s predilection for animal prints and jungle motifs in his S/S collection this trend continues with multi-coloured leopard print, bold colour combinations, as well as pale pastel animal prints. At MyTights we love Pretty Polly Animal Opaque tights available in Raspberry Pink and Grape. These are perfect for brightening up an outfit and tapping into the tribal trend!

Fans of leopard print don’t have to worry though, as it still comes in its usual colours! Check out Fearne Cotton in her chocolate brown pair. She keeps it casual in converse and matching sunnies. Be queen of the fashion jungle and get your own at MyTights, choose Celeste Stein Carletta Tights or Jonathan Aston Animal Tights and beat Fearne to the Lioness role!

At MyTights you also have the rest of the jungle at your disposal. Other styles include Jonathan Aston’s Tiger Net Tights and Celeste Stein Cheetah Tights. To achieve a full-on tribal effect wear these with perforated skirts or trousers layered over the top with slashed and ragged T-shirts, think “me Tarzan, you Jane” mixed with Balmain S/S and you’re all set.

Statement tights – anything goes this season!

Obviously, we’ve been raving about all kinds of hosiery and funky fashion tights for years, but we’ve loved 2009 as the entire world of fashion has joined in.

The celebs really got on board with statement tights after they were all over the catwalks back in the spring and now it’s winter, they are making even more of a splash on everyone’s legs than the rest of their outfits!

The Mirror’s Celebs magazine spotted a whole host of famous faces rocking patterned tights this month, with Henry Holland for Pretty Polly a popular choice for Agyness Deyn, Una from The Saturdays, Fearne Cotton and, erm, Cheryl from Hollyoaks.

However, there were so many other styles and designs that it proved really anything goes – Juliette Lewis wore red tights with glittery circles, Taylor Swift sported herringbone-patterned lovelies and Sadie Frost went for white lace to create a classy, Jackie O-style look.

There you go – proof that you should definitely experiment with patterned tights if you’ve never tried them! They’re fun, bang on-trend and they might even keep your pins warm as you head from party to party this Christmas.

Fearne Cotton glams up in lace patterned tights

We’re more used to seeing her in laid-back trainers and slouchy indie outfits, but Fearne Cotton has proved that she knows how to up the glam factor when she needs to.

The Radio 1 DJ was pictured by the Daily Mail at a charity auction for Macmillan last night wearing a blue velvet dress, gold shoes and some gorgeous black lace patterned tights.

Her long blonde locks were styled in a sleek down do and she added a slick of scarlet lipstick for some added sex appeal, resulting in a great outfit for a winter party.

It looked smart but still super-trendy and so much cooler than flashing too much goosebumped flesh when it’s freezing out!

For a similar look to Fearne’s, why not try the Jonathan Aston Sweet Rose Lace Tights from MyTights.com?

They have a sweet flower pattern all the way up the leg, as well as a saucy back seam for that 1940s pin-up-style effect.

See Fearne here and check out our full range of lace tights on our website too.

Fearne Cotton: I love socks!

If you want to stay ahead in the style stakes over the coming months, you’d better buy some socks.

This is the opinion of DJ Fearne Cotton, who was quoted by the Metro as saying that she loves the humble hosiery.

Speaking at London Fashion Week’s PPQ show, the 28-year-old – who recently took over Jo Whiley’s mid-morning slot on Radio 1 – commented: “I love socks and I just think that socks for me next year will be quite big. Socks always, I love socks!”

She also appears to like tights, as she was pictured sporting a gold lurex pair with her Vivienne Westwood dress later on.

We’re with Fearne in her love of socks as they are great for cooler autumn weather. Why not try a really jazzy pair in the form of Jonathan Aston’s Cotton-Cashmere Argyle Over the Knee Socks from MyTights.com?

They will definitely liven up your outfits and prevent you from feeling too sad about the nights drawing in this month!

Fearne Cotton proves you can wear socks with sandals

It’s always one of the big fashion debates come summer – can you wear socks with sandals and still look like a fashionista?

While Chloe Sevigny has always been a big fan of sporting cute women’s socks with open-toed shoes, many girls reckon it is the ultimate fashion faux pas and steer well clear.

However, we’re firmly in Chloe’s camp, particularly after seeing new evidence from Fearne Cotton this weekend in the Daily Mail.

The Radio 1 DJ was spotted out and about in denim shorts and a stripy top, along with purple strappy wedges and ankle socks.

She looked great and the socks definitely added an indie edge to an outfit that could otherwise have looked quite ordinary.

Fearne’s socks were black, but we would have loved to have seen her sport a pattern to complement those stripes on her top. Celeste Stein’s Ruby Stripes Ankle Socks – available from MyTights.com – have red vertical lines and would make a bold fashion statement for any indie chick.

La Cotton has certainly been working the hosiery of late – she was also spotted recently with Alesha Dixon in LA wearing wet lookleggings and a neon pink top.

Check Fearne out in her cute socks here.
