Over Knee Socks: Ashley Roberts Shows Us How

Ashley Roberts

Spring; you’ve got to love it. Not only does the weather get brighter, it also means we can try out some alternatives to those thick opaque tights we lived in all winter. This year we’ve noticed a trend that the team at MyTights are pretty excited about… over the knee socks! This week, however, it was the turn of former Pussycat Girl Ashley Roberts, who stepped out Stateside in a cute 90s-esque look. Laura’s Choice – New York Fashion Week: Our Favourite Hosiery!

There’s a real buzz around MyTights HQ at this time of year. Awards shows, red carpet events and above all, the fashion elite showcasing their collections on the catwalk… we just love it! With New York Fashion Week now in full swing, we’re not ashamed to say that we’ve been well and truly glued to our screens, taking every opportunity we can to spot some gorgeous new legwear! It certainly hasn’t disappointed, either, and the MyTights team are thrilled to see that hosiery is playing a big part in the AW15 collections of the most esteemed designers in the world. We obviously don’t want you to miss out on any of the action, which is why I thought it a brilliant idea to round up some of our favourite looks so far, and let you know how you can recreate them. You may not have the same budget as the style famous, but there’s no reason why you can’t bring a little bit of New York to your hosiery drawer with the offerings at MyTights.com…

Diane von Fürstenberg

We’ve always been a fan of Diane von Fürstenberg, but never more so than this week when her Fall collection featured our favourite fashion print of late…polkadots! We were hardly surprised to see spots on the catwalk, with spotty sheers seeming to be cropping up on the legs of just about everyone at the moment (Taylor Swift and Anne Hathaway to name but a few…) With one of her models being none other than Kendall Jenner herself, we were pleased to see that Fürstenberg’s range was both elegant and wearable, our favourite look being this simple white wrap dress, peep-toe heels and gorgeous black spotty sheer tights! For a copycat look, the Oroblu Adelle Tights are perfect, coming in black (à la Fürstenberg), as well as navy and nude for the more experimental amongst us.

Tommy Hilfiger

Hilfiger has been a household name for as long as we can remember, so it’s fair to say the American style extraordinaire knows a thing or two about what looks good. Taking to the runway in preppy leather outfits inspired by the Super Bowl, Hilfiger’s models all had one thing in common…and that was their ribbed over knee socks! I’m pleased to see that we’re on the same wavelength as the famous designers, as we’ve always been fans of the way ribbed hosiery can transform your look. You may not feel ready to pull on an all leather American football ensemble (we don’t blame you!), but if you’ve fallen under the charm of ribbed socks, head to Italian label Trasparenze and their Dora Wool Rib Over Knee Socks. A near on identical look to Hilfiger’s models, these look great both dressed up with heeled boots and a skater dress, or toned down with a chunky jumper dress and slip on plimsoles.

Oroblu Adelle Tights

 Marissa Webb

The name may not be all too familiar to you yet, but the up and coming designer has been turning heads in the fashion world of late, and one look at her AW15 collection will tell you all you need to know… she’s set to go stratospheric! With an emphasis on power dressing for the modern women, Webb’s collection was right up our street. Not least because it featured the, in our eyes, taken for granted fashion staple that is black opaque tights. As simple as they may be, there’s nothing out there quite so effective sometimes, and we can never say no to something with so much versatility. Our favourite look was this edgy red dress with collar, which Webb styled to perfection with leather boots and black opaques. We have an abundance of black opaque tights on offer at MyTights. For a particularly great pair, British brand Aristoc has a trio of choices depending on how much coverage you’re after. Regardless of whether you opt for the semi-opaque 30D, mid-opaque 50D or thick 80D, you’ll gain a pair of reliable and stylish opaques with staggering levels of quality given the price!

Thom Browne

Our eager eyes also spotted tights gracing the catwalk of American womenswear designer Thom Browne. Being high fashion and all, his collection was based on a slightly, well, macabre, theme. That’s not to mean it didn’t feature some gorgeous tights, however, with one such shot from his show featuring a chic pair of opaques with diamond print. Adding weight to the saying that ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’, Browne teamed his patterned tights with a black fur coat and ankle boots, as well as some slightly wayward applications of the make-up brush! For a matchy-matchy look, Pretty Polly does a very similar version in the form of the Pretty Polly Nylon Raised Diamond Tights, albeit with a very different price tag! The most dedicated hosiery fans will also have noticed the thick white tights worn in the background of the image. Don’t worry; we did too – which is why we’re pointing you in the direction of the Jonathan Aston 40D Opaque Tights, semi-opaque tights that are available in white as well as a multitude of other shades. If you’re a sucker for wool, opting for Wool White in the Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights isn’t a bad shout, either!

Charlotte Ronson

Celebrated British designer Charlotte Ronson’s collection combined feminine prints with more urban pieces; coming together to form a number of stylish looks that gained plaudits from the fashion know-it-alls. For us, it was reminiscent of ‘70s fashion, with most of her models sporting scrunch-knit legwarmer socks with leather boots. With both warmth and fashion kudos on offer, we certainly wouldn’t mind this style becoming one of the go-to looks of AW15! To make sure you’re best prepared, stock up early on the Pamela Mann Legwarmers. Available in black to mirror Ronson’s range, the more nostalgic of you out there might also opt for the brighter shades of orange, green and pink!

With a few days left to go before the red carpet is rolled up and the fashion spotlight turns to London, we’re sure there’s going to be a lot more hosiery taking centre stage. Watch this space!

Until next time…

Festival Fever

Wellies? Check. Baby wipes? Check. Backstage pass? Okay so I may not be able to help you with the last one, but the time has arrived to start prepping for a summer packed full of festivals and outdoor concerts. Whether it’s on homegrown soil or further afield, getting your outfit down to a T is a must, particularly if you’re heading to somewhere in good old Blighty. Come rain or shine, festival chic is a must have, and so I’ve rounded up a few tricks to ensure that you remain picture perfect all weekend long.

Adored and adorned by festival goers every year, wearing the right leg wear is about as important as remembering your ticket. Mud, grass and rain go hand in hand when it comes to festivals, so your trusty socks and tights will fast become your closest ally (bar the burger van). Soggy feet and chilly ankles have the potential to turn a good day upside down and back to front, so regardless of where you are pitching up and calling home for the weekend, take heed of some invaluable outfit pointers.

Going to Glastonbury?

More of a small town than a festival, Glastonbury has the potential to overwhelm even the most direction savvy of us. Given that it takes a good few hours to walk from one end to the other, comfy footwear is a must. After securing a decent pair of boots, chunky socks should be next on the list. Over the knee socks, ribbed or patterned, the list is endless. The usual rule of thumb tends to dictate that the thicker your socks, the happier your feet. Bearing in mind that you may get a little wet stood in the middle of Somerset, knee or over the knee length is a necessity. Working to protect both feet & footwear, along with acting like a cosy layer for bare legs, you’ll soon notice that aches are reduced and blisters are non-existent. For a goes-with-everything over the knee sock, dress your pins in the Trasparenze Dora Over The Knee Socks. Gorgeously soft and available in a range of shades, the faint ribbed detail adds a little interest. Stretching to above the knee, these are the perfect length to complement those denim cut offs.

Over Knee Socks

Fancy a colour pop? Perfect for when the sky is grey and everything around you is caked in mud, an injection of colour into outfits is the easiest way to make sure you stand out amongst the crowd. Not forgetting that Glasto is the birthplace of bohemian, all things rainbow tinted are embraced, from teepees to the waterproof ponchos. For your pick of the colour wheel, I can’t recommend the Cinzia Knee High Socks from Trasparenze enough. Made in almost every shade imaginable, the purse friendly price means you can even bring along a few pairs. Hugging your knees for a secure fit, these will peek over the tops of wellies and boots for a sweet touch. If, like me, you fancy showing off the full extent of your hosiery collection, there’s no reason why you can’t get a little creative with your patterns. The self-titled American ‘Print-cess’, Celeste Stein, have just about every design fathomable, from whimsical florals to patriotic flags. To embrace your inner hippy, treat pins to the A Powers Flowers Tights from the brand. Ideal for jazzing up understated dresses and keeping legs mud-free in the process, you’re bound to collect a few compliments as you make your way around.

Urban chic in the concrete jungle?

So you’ve politely declined the invitation to go camping/attend a barn dance/hiking and you’ve managed to convince everyone to stay in the comfort of the Big Smoke…but what on earth do you wear? Whilst waders and waterproofs may be acceptable deep in the English countryside, you’ll be hard pushed to find a mud slide in Hyde Park. For those lucky enough to go to London’s biggest music festival, Wireless, a wardrobe rethink may be in order. Out with outlandish patterns and in with urban chic as the bare legged look and quirky designs take over.

I’m sure as many of you know, I can’t champion the Falke Shelina Tights enough. Great for faking that no hosiery style, you can also cheat your way to that sun kissed glow (without having to leave the country!). With all shades reviewed by a dermatologist to help find the closest match, others will be left marveling at your brave choice to go without tights. Without a brief to make you reconsider hemlines and a realistic slight sheen finish, I love wearing these under shift dresses and teaming with my trusty ballet flats. Of course, no festival in London is complete without a tempestuous looking weather forecast, so luckily the bare leg look quickly adapts, with temperature regulating properties keeping you both refreshed in the sunshine and then warm when the temperature drops.

Of course, it goes without saying that London festivals are a natural habitat for young & emerging talent. From fashion designers to musicians, you can hardly walk two paces without witnessing a new trend unfolding. To show off your fashion credentials, anything by Henry Holland goes. Ahead of the polka dot trend that’s set to hit catwalks and high streets alike this season, the Reverse Polka Dot Tights are just the ticket. A favourite of mine, these go with and under just about everything. Showing off just a glimpse of leg beneath, these will take you from the main stage to the bar effortlessly. Likewise, the Suspender Tights from the young designer should be at the top of your festival wish list. Top Tip: If like me you adore eye catching hosiery but want to keep your look elegant, make sure that the rest of your outfit remains understated and pattern free. By keeping accessories minimal and your colour palette clean, you’ll soon have a chic look that you can wear to work.  Styled with a simple wrap dress and Chelsea boots, nothing says London cool quite like a cutting edge designer.

Still worried about the weather? For those that can’t stomach the thought of blue lips and the shivers, you’ll be pleased to know that footless tights and leggings are back on the trend barometer this season. From florescent to patterned, there’s bound to be a pair for any and every occasion. So whether you’re after a secret layer or a playful touch to an understated dress or skirt, be sure to include a few pairs in your weekend bag.

Phew! I’ve got festival fatigue just thinking about it!

Keeping it Simple: Monochrome is back

Fashion is hardly ever easy – from agonising over whether this colour goes with that shade to the mournful morning you realise you just got too old for colour clashing, just working out a suitable palette to play with is difficult enough without then having to trawl through a style, length or

cut to flatter your figure.  Thankfully, monochrome is back with a bang, as demonstrated by Little Mix in the latest edition of Notion Magazine – making colour choices easy again.

The four girls were shot in their trademark edgy style, with three of them in stark monochrome looks with Leigh-Anne providing a pop of colour in bold orange.  Stripes seemed to be the order of the day – possibly inspired by Henry Holland’s pre-season SS13 collection – as was tartan, spikes and leather.  Even better, the girls finished some of their stunning looks with tights from MyTights.com!  The Pamela Mann Fishnet Tights were a popular choice – it must be a celebrity thing, as the Saturdays also wore them on their tour earlier this year.

The easiest and chicest way to work the monochrome look is with a classic white shirt and black skirt – from peplum to peter pan collars, there are endless possibilities so you can make the trend work without compromising your own personal style.  Add

a flash of colour (anything bright works but keep it to one accessory).

Or why not try one of the other looks on show in the girls’ shoot?  Get too cool for school in a tartan mini and skirt or go all vampish vixen in leather and spikes.  Of course, there’s only one way to finish off your look, whatever you go for – the Little Mix Way, with fashion tights from MyTights.com!
