Q&A Session with Hosiery For Men!

We caught up with popular male hosiery blog ‘Hosiery For Men’ to get his thoughts on the world of male hosiery!

Why did you start wearing tights?

I first wore tights when I was asked to wear them for a school Shakespeare production when I was 14. I recall that they were opaque and dark green. I was amazed at how comfortable they were and unlike any clothing that I had worn previously.

I did feel that this was probably I should keep to myself at that stage, as I grew up at a time when if any boys were ‘different’ in any way at school they might be bullied..

But from that time on I became interested in wearing them more. I didn’t get that many opportunities when I was younger, but later on I started to buy pairs from myself. I experimented with different brands and styles (sheer, opaque, support etc) until I found what I liked.

It did feel somewhat lonely at first as in those days there were not many men wearing tights openly or admitting that they liked wearing them. Of course men wearing tights were visible in obvious places like theatre and dance, but not as a practical, every day item of clothing.

I think the breakthrough for me was in the early 1990s, when the upmarket tights brand Wolford made and marketed a style of black opaque tights for men. They called them ‘waist socks’, rather than tights (probably for marketing reasons). They got quite a lot of media coverage at the time and I actually remember going to the Wolford flagship store in Bond Street and trying to buy them but they didn’t yet have them in stock. I wish I had gone back as those tights are a very rare collector’s item now!

But with the internet, I have found that there were very large numbers of guys that were wearing tights and almost all the leading tights retailers, such as My Tights, were starting to cater for them.

Did it affect your confidence when you first started to wear them out?

Well, at first I was quite wary of sharing this preference with anyone, for fear of stigma etc. But actually those demons are just in one’s own head really. I have always worn them under trousers, and wear occasionally with shorts. Although I know there are some men who are very open about wearing them with shorts and this is also a look that many leading fashion designers have been developing.

I used to be worried that someone would notice, so used to always wear socks over them, Now I don’t bother if anybody notices whether I am wearing opaque tights or sheers.

I feel very confident wearing them now and in cold weather the feeling is wonderful. They seem to have this ability to warm the whole body.

What issues do you have when choosing tights for yourself, such as sizing, fit etc?

I have learned a great deal from buying different brands and styles, and also from testing the samples that I am sent for the Hosiery For Men blog that I write. Good quality sizing information is essential for men buying tights for themselves. We tend to be taller and of course have a different anatomy, particularly in certain areas! In general I look for tights that are available in a wider range of sizes and avoid one-size sizing as that almost always doesn’t work out well. I look for sizing that caters for 5’10″ and taller. Another key factor is whether the brief/panty has good depth – low-rise waists are not good for most men. They need tights that can comfortably stretch above the waist. Not all women’s brands do that. Plus size ranges often have good potential.

I particularly look for quality fabric and tights that are going to wear well and not ladder very easily, probably because we expect more wear from them, and we may not always handle them as carefully as women.

I also look at the Lycra/Elastane content in the fabric as that is a key factor in getting a good fit.

What styles and brands do you like?

I prefer the better quality and slightly more expensive brands. Basically when it comes to buying hosiery, you do get what you pay for. My preferences include Falke, Wolford, Aristoc and Cette. You pay a bit more for some of these brands but it’s worth it for the quality and how much wear you get from the tights.

Falke, in particular, are really superb. Every product they bring out seems to have been carefully designed and developed. The range of sizing is excellent and the XL sizes always fit me perfectly. They use premium yarns and their tights always make your legs feel amazing. I love their Pure Matt 100 tights in really cold weather. The Pure Matt 50 tights are also great when it is cool. The Falke Cotton Touch tights are another favourite of mine, as they are so comfortable and the fabric breathes well. The Falke Pure Matt 20 tights are a great premium sheer tight and seem to last for ever if you look after them.

Falke used to make men’s tights also. They know that their products are popular with men across Europe but I am convinced that they now design their ranges to be unisex.

Why are tights a good idea for guys as well as women? What advantages do they have for men?

Well tights were invented by men so they have never really not been a good idea for us. Firstly they are practical for keeping your legs warm and healthy. Secondly they can provide support for the legs and circulation for men who work outside or who work standing up for long periods. Tights are very beneficial for men with leg cramps or circulation problems. Finally, they simply feel great. I can’t see why only women should be able to enjoy the benefits of wearing tights.

How do you like to style your tights?

I like opaque tights more than anything in dark colours such as black, brown and blue. I don’t really have a style as such as I wear them under trousers and jeans. But I do try and match the shade with the shoes or boots, and trousers I am wearing. I quite like argyle, ribbed and diamond styles as well. Thick black opaque tights look just like socks unless they have a shine to them.

I also like sheer and semi-sheer tights when it’s not very cold. They feel great under trousers, especially if they have a slight sheen to them.

What have been your experiences when buying tights for yourself?

My experiences, to be honest, have only been positive. A couple of times, sales assistants have assumed that I was buying the tights for someone else until I told them they were for me! Occasionally that has been met with surprise, but usually people have been really professional and helpful. I think that is because it is less unusual than people might think. One of the best experiences I had was in Harrods in London, who have an extensive range of Falke hosiery. The assistant talked me through the range and based her recommendations on her expertise and experience. That was the first time I tried the Falke Pure Matt 100 tights.

Of course, it is easy to but tights online now. My Tights, for example, has a huge range of brands and styles to choose from. This makes it so much easier to choose what you need. The selection is much more extensive than any high street store can offer.

To me it’s been such a positive development that there is such a great selection of tights available online now. There always seem to be new styles and brands to try. From a quality perspective, tights now are the best they have ever been. With modern technology and great fabrics, it is much easier for men to find great quality tights with good fit. My advice is to go for quality brands and you won’t be disappointed.

Ask The Expert: Your hosiery questions answered!

Spending the working week surrounded by tights, I’ve amassed a fair chunk of knowledge over the years about all the different realms of the hosiery world, whether on the production side of things, technical terms, or even how to instantly spot different types of toe (yes, really!) With the colder autumn months looming, we thought it would be a great idea to put together a one stop guide that will hopefully answer the most common questions the MyTights team are asked. Haven’t found the answer to the question you’ve always wanted to know? Don’t hesitate to contact our friendly customer services team who will be happy to assist!

1. What is denier?

All tights are discussed in terms of denier, but what actually is it? Well, put simply, denier is the technical term used to describe how thick hosiery is. Referring to the weight of the yarn from which the hosiery is woven, 1 denier means that 9,000 metres of yarn weights 1 gram. Generally speaking, the lower the denier, the sheerer the appearance of the tights are. Likewise, the higher the denier, the more opaque the hosiery will be!

2. What’s the difference between sheer and opaque hosiery?

You might have noticed that hosiery is classified as being either sheer and opaque, the difference lying in the weight of the yarn used. Sheer hosiery (usually between 10-20 denier) is finer in appearance, and thin enough for your skin to show through. Opaque hosiery on the other hand is thicker in appearance, much warmer and altogether more durable. We define opaque hosiery as being above 40 denier, with tights lying between 30-40 denier considered to be semi-opaque

3. What is a matte finish?

The most versatile of hosiery tends to have a matte finish. This is characterised by tights that have a completely flat look without any reflection, generally knitted from multifilament yarns which don’t reflect light. What’s more, matte hosiery won’t draw any attention to your legs, so can be worn for just about any event, regardless of whether it’s a trip to the shops or a formal event. How’s that for versatility?

4. What are the benefits of bare leg look hosiery?

You might think that wearing tights in exactly the same shade of your legs is futile, but wearing bare leg look hosiery has a host of hidden benefits. Like make up for your legs, skin tone styles give your pins a flawless finish, help in achieving an even colour and moisturised finish, and can even help you cheat your way to a sunkissed glow! What’s more, they offer some slight coverage should it be a chillier summer day, without taking away from a natural look.

5. Are footless tights the same as leggings?

Similar in appearance, the main difference between footless tights and leggings lies in the thickness. Although both are free from any material at the foot, leggings tend to be much warmer, and thick enough to be worn without the need for longer hemlines. Footless tights on the other hand tend to be less opaque, and would usually require a dress or tunic to cover up.

6. What’s the difference between hold ups and stay ups?

You may have seen both ‘hold ups’ and ‘stay ups’ used to describe the same style of hosiery, that is hosiery that offers a similar look to stockings, but with sticky pads rather than the inconvenience of a suspender belt. So, what is the difference? The answer is – there isn’t one! Both terms are used to describe the exact same thing – tomay-to, tomar-to!

7. Can I fix a snag in my tights before it becomes a ladder?

We’ve all been there – getting dressed in the morning to find our brand new tights have already snagged, it’s enough to put anyone in a bad mood! But to stop it developing into a ladder, a top yet very simple tip is to add a dab of clear nail varnish to the area. Or if you’re especially keen to prevent ladders from forming, check out our range of run resist hosiery, instead!

8. What makes fashion tights ‘fashion tights’?

Any regular visitors to the site will know that we separate some of our hosiery into a fashion category. This is generally the case when tights feature something that is considered to be a trend, be it a floral pattern, spots, diamonds, or even something as traditional as a backseams. Fashion styles will ensure you stand out from the style pack, and differ from plain opaques and sheers, which are considered to be more everyday wear.

9. Which hosiery brands will last me the longest?

At MyTights, we hand select our products to ensure that they all offer value for money, but there are some brands that tend to go the extra mile in terms of durability. As with all walks of life, you get what you pay for when it comes to hosiery, but my top tips for brands to invest in when you’re building a hosiery capsule are Wolford, Falke and Oroblu. That’s not to say that the brands in the more affordable end of the price bracket should be overlooked however, and I would also advise to take a look at our ladder resist styles, which are made with specialist yarns to prevent ladders from forming.

10. How often should I wash my tights?

We recommend to wash your hosiery after every wear, to keep it a) looking its best, and b) staying fresh. In an ideal world, washing hosiery by hand is the best solution to keeping it looking pristine, but alternatively, popping your tights in a hosiery bag and using a cool wash is an equally good method!

11. How should I dry my tights?

One of the worst things you can do to your hosiery is to leave it to dry near direct heat, such as a radiator. STOP IN YOUR TRACKS! Drying in extreme temperatures will damage the weave, and will likely leave your tights ready for the fashion scrapheap. The best way to dry tights is on the line, or on a drying rack placed away from any direct heat. Oh, and never iron, either!

12. Which denier weights are appropriate for which season?

We all know how quickly the weather can change from heatwave to washout, but generally speaking, different weights of hosiery will be more of use in specific seasons. In the winter, stick to thermal tights or opaque tights, occasionally wearing semi opaque hosiery should it be a milder day. The spring and autumn months are often subject to change, but typically you’d wear semi-opaque or sheer styles. In the summer, opt for sheer or for something extra natural – ultra sheer styles.

13. Control tights vs. Support Tights – what’s the difference?

Control top tights and support tights are similar in that they both have hidden talents, and offer a lot more than meets the eye. The fundamental difference is that control top tights help to smooth over your figure using hidden shaping zones, whereas support tights alleviate tired legs by boosting circulation, thanks to a system called graduated compression. This works by applying pressure at your ankles, which gradually travels up the leg, getting lighter as it does so. Both equally as brilliant, however!

14. What’s the best type of toe to wear with different footwear?

If you’re a fan of chunkier footwear styles such as winter boots and trainers, I would recommend opting for a reinforced toe, which has a thicker weave to prevent any holes from forming in the often fragile toe area. Next up on the spectrum are sandal toes, which have barely visible reinforcement, where the weave is slightly stronger across the toe, but perfect for wearing with open toed shoes.

In the summer, sheer toes are invaluable, and are common in ultra sheer tights. Sheer toes should be worn with open toed footwear as strappy sandals, as can open toed styles, which you should choose if you want a super natural look, but still want to benefit from the even skin tone offered by sheers.

15. What’s the difference between gusset types?

Tights can not only differ in terms of denier and toe, but in the type of gusset they use too. Tights with a cotton gusset are designed to improve comfort, fit and hygiene, and can be recognised by a white circular patch in the section where the legs join. Similar to a cotton gusset, traditional gussets also help to improve comfort and fit, but won’t aid hygiene, as they aren’t made from breathable cotton.

Not all tights will have a gusset however, with some opting to have the same fabric on the crotch as in the rest of the leg. Finally, some styles may also have an open gusset, in which there is no fabric whatsoever on the crotch, and these are great for keeping cool and refreshed in the warmer weather.

Wave goodbye to imperfections: Coverage Tights

Working at a hosiery company, we’ve become accustomed to images of models with impossibly long legs and perfect skin, but we know that this isn’t a true reflection of the average woman. But instead of lamenting your imperfections, learn to love what you’ve got with our range of coverage tights! Similar to wearing make-up on your legs (just without the mess), coverage tights help to even out skin tone and mask blemishes such as scars or varicose veins.

The trick to finding coverage tights is to opt for sheers that are slightly thicker than the average (20-30 denier, ideally),  which are still sheer enough to achieve a summery look without looking like you’ve dressed for mid Feb. Top of the bill, for me, are the Wolford Neon 40 Tights. Don’t be fooled by the name; although these tights have the durability of a 40 denier, they appear like 20 denier tights, camouflaging your flaws and coming with a suitably glam glossy finish. For something a little more affordable, Italian brand Oroblu also have a great option with their Sensuel 30 Tights. Available in 7 shades and with a slight sheen for day to night versatility, these tights are virtually indestructible and will feel utterly lovely against your skin. Or for the same peace of mind but with a little extra luxury, make a beeline for the Falke Sensation Seamless 20 Tights, which come free from any seams, so you can wear figure hugging dresses to your heart’s content.

Aristoc Bodytoners Low Leg Toner Tights

Aristoc Bodytoners Low Leg Toner Tights

Control Top

Amongst everything else we have on our to-do list, it’s not always easy to find the time (or motivation) to exercise. If you’ve found your gym pass gathering dust, control top tights may be the perfect solution. Defining your silhouette and remaining completely hidden from outside view, control top tights appear just like any other fashion-forward hosiery, but come with secret panels to smooth over the most common problem zones. It’s an absolute must for me to point you in the direction of the Aristoc Bodytoners Range, comprising 5 pairs of tights that target different areas of your body. From the Tummy Tuck Tights for your midriff to the Low Leg Toner Tights for your tum, bum and thighs, this range of sheers is affordable, effective and should be your first port of call! For stronger control, the same name always crops up: Spanx! It’s not all about shaping suits and the like at Spanx HQ, either, as they actually also produce shaping tights. The Spanx In Power Line Super Shaping Sheers combine strong control shorts with inbuilt sheer tights – one secret we’re very happy to keep. Or for smoothing control with the quality of Wolford, head to the Wolford Individual 10 Control Top Tights, offering a high-end look that will stand the test of time. After something a little more purse-friendly? The Charnos Killer Figure Hourglass Control Tights are just the ticket with their medium control, slight sheen finish and reinforced toe.

Laura’s Choice: Support Tights

Whether you spend long hours on your feet at work or remain largely inactive sat at your desk, it’s not uncommon for our legs to become jaded, tired, and generally uncomfortable. Many of us often suffer in silence, choosing to ignore our aches and pains and in the process neglect our long-suffering pins. But think about it this way – if you had a migraine, you’d reach for the Ibuprofen. Just as you’d get some antibiotics for a nasty cough. So, why should our legs be any different? Support tights are a fantastic way to alleviate your sore limbs, using a clever little technique called graduated compression. This works by applying pressure to the ankle region, gradually getting lighter as it travels up the leg to push blood towards your heart for an all-round healthier circulation. Not bad for a pair of tights, right? Even better, it’s now entirely possible to channel a fabulous legwear look and have a real spring in your step, with the excellent variety of options on offer at MyTights!

First things first, you should know that support tights come in a range of different factors. In simple terms, these denote the strength of compression used, which range from 6 to 21, although it is worth noting that anything above factor 15 does require a medical prescription. These are displayed in brackets next to all of the products on our support tights page, as well as the level of support (Light to XX Firm). If you’ve never used support tights before, a general rule of thumb is to start with the lightest support, swapping for stronger if these aren’t doing the trick. Now, with the technical stuff out of the way, I can get back to giving you some of my top picks…

Great for…on a budget

Pretty Polly Stand Easies Tights

Pretty Polly Stand Easies Tights

If you want to look after your purse as well as your legs, a great option are the Pretty Polly Stand Easies Tights. As the name would suggest, these light support tights will give your legs the gentle boost they need, all the while giving you a classic pair of 20 denier tights for everyday use. With three natural skin tone shades, they also come with the advantage of being available in sizes ranging up to XXL. All of that for £5…who can argue with that? If you like these but prefer a slightly sheerer leg, the Pretty Polly 15D Light Support Tights are just the ticket, made with a 15 denier leg, the choice of Nude and Barely Black and a budget busting price of just £3.25 a pair. Perfect for the office, a brilliant option for fans of semi-opaque legwear would be the Levante Relax Medium Support Tights. Typical of Italian brand Levante, these 30 denier tights are excellent value for money and come with a real air of quality. What’s more, the medium support level is ideal if the lightest support options aren’t quite enough, while the choice of 7 shades means you can stock up to have the perfect pair for each occasion.

Great for…added benefits

Falke Active Shaping Support 20 Tights

Falke Active Shaping Support 20 Tights

What would you say if I told you you could look chic, feel revitalised AND tame your problem areas all at the same time? Well, the reality is that you can, with the Aristoc Bodytoners Tummy Tuck Tights! Made with a medium support level (factor 8), these 15 denier tights have an incognito control panel that works to flatten your midriff and energise your legs. Given an added style hit with an elegant slight sheen finish, trials showed that 9 out of 10 wearers saw a marked improvement in both their aching legs and silhouette. Statistics never lie! Carrying on with the formidable trio is the Falke Active Shaping Support 20 Tights, perfect for your tiresome legs with their X Firm support level. Slightly more expensive, but, in my opinion worth every penny, you’ll gain a stylish pair of 20 denier matte tights from a luxury German brand  that feel truly exquisite against your leg. Not just focusing on your tummy this time, you’ll also achieve a silhouette to be proud of, with a top secret control panty that works on your hips and derrierre as well as your stomach. The hardest working tights in the business! If your waist is your problem zone, you simply can’t go without the Aristoc Bodytoners High Leg Toner Tights. Again boosting your circulation with their medium support level, these 15 denier tights have a knitted control panel and high cut leg to really get to work on shaping your waist and tummy region. New Year Fash-olutions: Our top ten

It’s that time of year again. New Year, new you! 2015 is going to be different. This year, you’re going to banish the carbs, work up a sweat at the gym 5 times a week and quit the booze, right?

We envy you if you manage to stick to your January promises, but let’s be honest, it’s not always easy. So why not save yourself the guilt come early February and make some New Year resolutions that you can stick to? In our eyes, the perfect way to bring in 2015 in style is to revamp your hosiery collection. With this in mind, the MyTights team have been busily compiling a selection of our own fash-olutions (get it?)

Here are our top ten…

1) Don’t stress, invest: We’ve all got that token pair of tights in our drawer that we bought on a whim – an impulse buy that you convinced yourself you’d wear once a week, but in reality, have never been taken out of the packet. So this year, spend some time in creating a capsule collection of quality basics that you will actually wear – we’re talking black opaques and luxury sheers!

2) Organisation is key: nobody wants to be rummaging through their bedside table at 6am, desperately trying to find THAT pair of tights that will finish off your outfit perfectly. So take action; throw out anything you haven’t worn in the last year and organise your fashion tights with the brilliant Stoxbox. A neat and tidy hosiery drawer awaits…

3) Be braver: fashion is there to be experimented with, so instead of wishing you could pull off a pair of suspender tights that you’ve seen in a celebrity magazine, go out and try it! You never know, you might find a new hosiery BFF. Ankle socks are a great place to start!

4) Discover your perfect skintone shade: it may take a little bit of trial and error to find exactly what you’re after, but finding your perfect skin tone shade is a must. Not only will it save you time and money, it’ll give you no end of confidence and allow you to pull off a bare leg look with panache! Need a little help? Check out our in-depth skintone guide.

5) Turn your back on black: colour, colour, colour! Black opaques are a necessary component of every staple collection, but it’s entirely possible to achieve a similarly chic and classic look with a pair of coloured tights. We’re not saying opt for bright yellow straight away, but why not try out muted tones like navy, burgundy and dark grey?

6) Find the ideal shapewear for problem areas: shapewear can be daunting at first – what will work for you? Is it worth the money? The MyTights shapewear guide is there to help, offering you all the advice you need to find something suitable for your problem zones. The hassle-free way to a streamlined silhouette!

7) Throw out your odd socks: most of us have done it at some point, haven’t we? Whether intentional or not, odd socks are a fashion faux pas. Start off the year with a clean slate – grab a bin bag, throw your rejects away and replace them with our fabulous range of quality socks. Something for every style!

8) Know the key trends: a capsule collection is a great idea, but it’s always nice to a mix it up a bit with a patterned pair of fashion tights! To ensure your legwear is current and on-trend, take it upon yourself to follow the catwalks at London Fashion Week to find the most up to date styles. We’ll no doubt be blogging about it as it happens, too, so watch this space!

Levante Relax Medium Support Tights

9) Suffer no more: if you spend a long time on your feet at work, it’s not unusual for your legs to feel tired and jaded come the end of the day. In 2015, tell yourself that enough is enough – give your pins the attention they deserve with a pair of our excellent support tights. No longer limited to frumpy and unflattering tights, our range of support tights are sourced from an array of industry leading brands… so it’s entirely possible to channel a chic legwear look AND have a spring in your step in the process.

10) Put yourself first!: Last but not least…treat yourself. Feeling confident is hugely important, and a brilliant way to boost your mood in the miserable winter months. After all, if you look great, you feel great. So this year, if you’ve spotted a pair of tights that you can’t stop thinking about, don’t worry about the price…splash out and put yourself first!

Happy New Year!

Anti-Cellulite, Anti-Fatigue, Anti-Fat: The Body Improving Tights That Work For You

shatobu-tightsIf there’s one thing we love more than hosiery, it’s smartie-pants hosiery that uses modern technology to make our lives easier.  Caffeine tights made headlines a few years ago for their anti-cellulite properties, and now the science behind hosiery design is more advanced than ever.

So sit back, relax and forget all about the gym- here’s a round up of hosiery that could revolutionise your life…

Calorie Burning

We know it sounds too good to be true, but the range of hosiery and shapers from ShaToBu really can help you burn more calories with no extra effort on your part.  The boffins at the brand have designed a range of hosiery and shapewear that use resistance band technology to make your body work harder as you go about your day to day life – without you even realizing.  Still not convinced?  Check out the full ShaToBu explanation for all the science behind these amazing calorie burning tights.

Unsightly orange peel skin can be the absolute bane of even the slimmest woman’s life – how often have you worked your derrière off for months in preparation for the beach season, only to realise that you still dread donning that bikini in fear of others spying a telltale ripple?  The Charnos Emana tights have been clinically proven to increase collagen synthesis by 9% and skin elasticity by 8%, as well as giving an 11% improvement on signs of cellulite!  Again, feel free to check out the benefits of Emana for the nitty gritty on the magical fibre used to make these incredible anti cellulite tights.

Skin Perfecting

Charnos didn’t stop there, either.  They also created the skin perfecting Charnos Energising Support range. In a two month blind trial conducted by Charnos, results clearly demonstrated that support hosiery makes legs look and feel fabulous.  But the main draw of this revolutionary collection is that as well as all of the benefits that support brings (see below for more of us waxing lyrical about support tights), the capsule collection of three products has been treated with a unique microencapsulate blend of Vitamin E (containing anti-oxidant properties which help to protect the skin from premature ageing), Sea Kelp (rich in nutrients known to improve skin tone and stimulate blood flow – which helps to reduce the build-up of cellulite) and Shea Butter (a natural oil helping to keep the skin soft and hydrated).  The result?  Soft, smooth, revitalized legs ready to be put on show!

firm-support-tightsFatigue Busting

In our humble opinion, support hosiery is the most underrated antidote to a hectic schedule we’ve ever come across.  Formerly the preserve of the older woman or “problem” legs, newer products on the market like the aforementioned Charnos Energising Support range and the luxurious Falke Support collection have turned preconceptions on their head.  Support tights work by using graduated compression (which means that they are woven to be tighter around the ankle, slightly less around the calf and less again at the top of the leg), which forces blood back to the heart and can alleviate aching feet and legs, as well as improving blood circulation.  We’ve always said than independent women support themselves… and now from exhausted mums to busy professionals, it’s easier than ever before!

So whether it’s a little TLC for weary legs or tights as good as a beauty treatment for your skin, treat yourself to one of these miracle workers… or stock up on them all!  Who knew science could be so fun?

Support Hosiery – The ultimate helping hand!

Support TightsRight ladies, it?s time to talk support tights. Yes, historically they may not be the most glamorous additions to your hosiery drawer, but by god do they work magic on fatigued pins and sluggish circulations. A saviour for those of us who spend the best part the day standing or sitting still for long periods of time, support tights are undoubtedly the hardest working hosiery out there. Once old fashioned and a little on the dowdy side, support tights have been given a swift makeover by fashion savvy brands, making sure that when it comes to wanting a little more support, you?ll sing your praises loud & proud.

How do they work?

From tights to hold ups and even knee highs support hosiery has made its way into almost every shape and form, making sure that just about everyone can benefit from a little support now and again. But how exactly do they work? To put it simply (and without the need for a lab coat), support hosiery works its magic by applying a graduated compression system. With the pressure at its highest on your ankles, it then decreases as you go up your legs, helping to encourage blood along your legs and eventually meeting the heart. A better flow of blood equals a healthy circulation, resulting in happy legs and an even happier you! To top it off, the gentle massaging effect does its bit to help prevent unwanted health conditions such as varicose veins or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). I told you they worked hard…

Support Tights can shape too?!

Aristoc Bodytoners

If you?re not already won over by their superhero qualities (saving the world one varicose vein at a time!), then may I point you in the direction of the gorgeously chic Aristoc Bodytoners range. Designed to deliver a graduated compression, the fabulous collection proves that you can forever feel as good as you look. Offering support for your legs, the range also comes with several control options to help reveal a sleek silhouette. For those who consider their stomachs as a problem area, the Aristoc Bodytoners Tummy Tuck Tights are just the ticket. Working to iron out any unwanted lumps & bumps, the legs of these tights offer a medium Factor 8 level of support (more about this in a minute!), meaning that your circulation is still taken care of. If you?re after a touch more compression for your legs but still want to tame wobbly bits, the Relax Firm Control Tights from Levante are a must have. With a higher Factor 10 support looking after your circulation, a light control has been worked into the brief section of your tights to lift derri?res and smooth stomachs .Fashionable by name and by nature, the Fashion Toner Tights offer the same Factor 8 leg support but this time round, the designers at Aristoc HQ have added a little flair, with an elegant diamond print decorating pins. Support tights, dowdy? I think not!

What do support factors mean?

Support Factors Explained!

As the pioneers of support hosiery, British brand Elbeo has been around a lot longer than our circulation complaints. But before I delve into all that Elbeo has to offer, I ought to explain exactly what different factors of support mean. Ranging from the extra firm Factor 12 to the light Factor 6, the levels are available on MyTights.com total four factors all together. Each factor equals a different amount of ?mm Hg? ? Millimetres of Mercury at 0?c. However, anything beyond Factor 12 begins to creep into medical grounds, with some prescriptions even calling for a Factor 20+ compression.

From super strong to a light helping hand…

Pretty Polly Support Tights

For some, the stronger the better, making the Elbeo Supreme Support 30D Tights a must have. Delivering the highest level of compression that we stock, a Factor 12, the semi opaque tights are ideal for everyday wear, working to eliminate aches. Likewise, the Active Support 40 Tights from Falke also offer a strong Factor 12 support, but high quality yarns treating your legs to an oh so smooth and silky soft feel. Available in five shades for versatility (including a chic black, trendy navy creamy nude), these are ideal if you want to remain stylish & supported on that lengthy commute. Too strong, too soon? Treat pins to the other end of the support spectrum in the best selling Pretty Polly 15D?Light Support Tights. Great if you?re searching for a comfortable pair for every day wear, the sheer tights offer a light Factor 6 support to energise and revive tired legs.

If you?re simply after a little pick up me to take travelling, pop on a pair of the Charnos Medium Energising Support Knee Highs. A must have for frequent flyers, the sheer 15 denier knee highs offer a medium Factor 8 support around ankles, with a gentler Factor 5 around your calves. Perfect for keeping circulation moving without you having to lift a finger or foot, these also come with a nifty massage sole to help bring a little more comfort to your day on the go. Discreet enough to pop on underneath trousers, the Pretty Polly Silver Fresh Support Knee Highs will also help you win the war against DVT and varicose veins too!

Support hosiery, we salute you!
