Just like a little black dress, a good white shirt and a made for you pair of jeans, no wardrobe should be without a decent pair of opaques, or several. Am I right? Of course I am. When we recently carried out a survey all across the UK, opaques were the one thing that came top of the list. Everyone has them. So, if you are an opaque virgin or just looking to restock your wardrobe, here’s my guide to THE opaques to buy this season.
Mega Thick Opaques
Opaques come in all shapes and thicknesses and right up there at the top are Pretty Polly 200D Thermal Opaque Tights. The thickest tights around, these have a fleecy thermal lining that make them outerwear in their own right.
Also right up there in the ultimate coverage category are Pamela Mann 120 Denier Tights (also available in plus sizes up to a UK size 32). A classic black opaque with added warmth, no cold wind will blow through these babies. These are ideal if you’re on a budget, but should you decide to look for something a touch more luxurious then I would recommend the Falke Pure Matt 100 Tights – not only will they keep your pins fabulously cosy, they are available in a range of 5 classic shades.
In the 80D stakes there are several rivals for the crown. Mary Portas is a newcomer but has produced several great collections. Her opaques are no exception. Mary Portas and Charnos Satin 80 Tights have a lovely slight shine and seven gorgeous colours ranging for fern green to aubergine. I also love the Wolford Mat Opaque 80 Tights, which are super soft on the skin and hardwearing – perfect if you’re looking for a luxury wardrobe staple. Pamela Mann 80 Denier Tights have an incredible colour range of nineteen colours. Take one dress and make it look different every day for the ultimate frugal chic.
Falke, my eternal favourite has a 70 denier option which is my personal wardrobe basic. Falke Seidenglatt 70 Tights have nine beautiful colours including some of the great classics, all with a shimmer that will highlight any outfit, day or night.
those who like solid coverage but perhaps something a little lighter on the legs, there is the 60 denier finish.. Pretty Polly are always great at catering to all tastes, and their Pretty Polly 60 Denier Plush Tights come in good old black pegged alongside chartreuse, grey and cerise. The perfect legwear for early winter.
Down to 50 denier and the Pamela Mann 50D Tights reigns supreme here. If frugal shopping is your mantra this winter then look now further. The incredible range of 28 different colours, all priced at under a fiver will revive every possible outfit in your wardrobe. Not far behind, Jonathan Aston 40D Opaque Tights are slightly lighter in weight but also have an amazing range of 19 colours. Combine with the Pamela Mann ones and you might just be able to get through winter by wearing a different pair of tights each day!
Of course, if you’re after a finer denier opaque for an extra special event, the Wolford Satin Opaque 50 Tights will give you grown up glamour. A slight sheen finish means they’ll add a classy, polished look to all of your outfits.
Mary Portas and Charnos Almost Opaque 40 Tights are another collection that show this queen of fashion’s style substance. The lovely muted range of ten grown up colours will definitely upgrade your wardrobe to meet this season’s key trends. Although, if dark and moody is your style, there’s no need to go glamming up in green. Aristoc 40D Microfibre Tights will tick your boxes. The matte finish only serves to highlight the somber elegance of grey, black, navy and magenta in the range.
So there you have it. Tights to meet all shapes and sizes, all pockets and styles and in all sorts of thicknesses. So what are you waiting for? Fold up your sheers, make room in your drawers and stock up now before the weather turns. This is the UK after all!
Until next week….
