Spanx's founder Sara Blakely once cut the feet off a pair of control tights, in desperation over not wanting a VPL in her cream trousers but wanting to wear open toed shoes.

Realising she was onto a winner, she bit the bullet, used up all of her savings on a prototype in footless bodyshaping hosiery and sped to success. Spanx was born selling over50,000 pairs in the first three months. Tens of thousands have since indulged in her miracle product.
